Sumerian releases statement on Upon a Burning Body publicity stunt

mayhem

Here is the statement that just posted on Sumerian FaceBook Page about the report of Danny Leal Missing:

I woke up to a ton of missed calls and just saw all this stuff about Danny Leal of UABB posing as that he’s been abducted or kidnapped. My phone hasn’t stopped ringing since. As a child, we all learn the story “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and it sticks within our consciousness for a reason. I do not condone this type of publicity stunt. This was done behind my back and I am not OK with it. In my eyes, there’s never a time to use the possibility of real-life abduction, injury or murder of someone you care about to promote anything, especially an album. If you need to resort to that, then you have lost the plot. We as a society should have evolved past that way of thinking by now and especially within the rock/metal community, given all the tragedy that has happened in our world over the past few years. There are some people who owe us an apology. -Ash Avildsen, Creator & CEO of Sumerian Records.

I just saw the post after getting off the phone with the San Antonio Police Department that mentioned their Missing Persons department has been flooded with calls for the past several hours. We saw the original post about Danny missing but of course, we don’t publish without fact checking everything. Many are waiting for a post by Upon a Burning Body.

Well, we did want to get the post out immediately to dispel the rumors around this. Please share and let everyone know. We don’t people worrying unnecessarily.

Publicity stunts have always been quite popular and have been around for ages but in today’s world, they take on a new meaning. Sadly, we live in such a magnified world where within hours the entire world could know about something that would have been a publicity stunt for days, even weeks.  I don’t blame the band or the label. It is not going to change my opinion of their music in any way. I hope people can just move forward. I personally love their music and will continue to support them. I look forward to seeing them at Mayhem this Sunday.  Stay tuned for our Mayhem Festival coverage!
