After having to postpone the tour in November/December 2014, Against me! finally came back to Germany and they also made a stop in Munich last Tuesday.

Opening act was a punk band from the UK called ‘Caves’. Often the opening acts play only for a smaller group of people because most fans only come shortly before the main act is supposed to play. Not so this time. The venue was already crowded when they started their set. Caves is a three piece punk band from Bristol UK. They played a dynamic set with tons of songs (all about 2 minutes long) and almost no stops in between. Their latest release is called ‘Leaving’. You can listen to it or better yet, download it, at http://caves.bandcamp.com/.

Main support was Roger Harvey. His music is best described as guitar rock, which didn’t fit the punk bill entirely, but nevertheless was a great set. It might have been better to switch Caves with R.H., because his music is definitely slower. I loved to watch both acts play, but the rockier tunes slowed everything down a bit and since the support bands should get the audience ready for the main act, it might have been better to switch. Please don’t get me wrong here, because that doesn’t criticize the music at all. Roger’s latest record is called ‘Twelve houses’.

At almost exactly 10.15 pm Against Me hit the stage, starting off with ‘I Was A Teenage Anarchist’ from their 2010 album ‘White Crosses’, followed by ‘True Trans Soul Rebel’ from their latest record ‘Transgender Dysphoria Blues’. The venue was packed at that time. After the first three songs it was like something triggered the already heated crowd, ‘cause suddenly there was immense pushing and shoving from every side and that didn’t stop until the end of the show. Against Me also didn’t really take pauses to ‘waste’ any time on longer talks (nothing negative in that either). One song followed the next. It was a 20 song set with song from every release so far, like ‘Pints Of Guinness Make You Strong’, ‘T.S.R.’, ‘Don’t loose touch’, ‘Thrash Unreal’ and ‘White Crosses’. By halftime it felt like they turned the heater on inside the venue instead of the air conditioning or venting. The crowd really went wild throughout the whole set, beverages were flying around, people were crowd-surfing, stage-diving and just going nuts in general. They closed their energetic set with ‘Black Me Out’. But it was not yet time to say goodbye. The band played four encores, which is as special as playing a nearly 90 minutes set.

Like all the shows I’ve been to lately it was a fun evening. All the bands obviously had fun performing for the audience and the crowd loved them all, which is exactly how it’s supposed to be…
