Interview with Shiloh Musik of Fathom

We are excited to bring an interview with the rocker and mastermind of Fathom, Shiloh Musik. Fathom has been praised for bringing the complicated world of romance back into rock, in a style dubbed “romanticore”. Songwriter Shiloh who also performs on keys and vocals truly delivers emotionally driven lyrics wrapped in captivating vocals. Check out our interview with Shiloh:

Music Junkie Press: Thank you for Shiloh for taking the time out to talk with us here at Music Junkie Press. We were blown away by your video for Tell Me Why. First it is an incredible song that not only brings out deep emotionally driven lyrics but you completely rock it as well! How was it making that video?

Shiloh: Thank you so much! Making the video was so much fun! In fact, I have just uploaded a couple videos that I recorded on my phone as a sort of a “Behind-the-scenes” look at my point of view.

Music Junkie Press: What are you currently working on now?

Shiloh: Right now I am recording a full length album. I am working with 3 different producers, once of which as worked with “Thirty Seconds to Mars,” another with “My Chemical Romance,” and the third who has worked with ”Linkin Park” and “HIM.” I am so excited and honored to have this oppurtunity.

Music Junkie Press: Do you plan on coming out to California? Your music and style would fit in great as a residency on Sunset Strip!

Shiloh: YES !! I love Los Angeles! I would like to live in Santa Monica or Beverly Hills. I love to go to Hollywood; and the Sunset Strip is an amazing place. The Rainbow has to be my favorite hangout. Get their pizza with extra cheese and dip it in ranch hehe

Music Junkie Press: Your music captures great emotion, both lyrically and sonically. Do you have a particular songwriting process?

Shiloh: Thank you. I write… I’d say about 95% of all my songs by hearing a sound or musical phrase in my head. I then go to the piano and recreate it. The sound and overall feeling of the music then inspires my subject or lyrics. Only a few times have I had some awesome lyrical phrase pop into my mind, or upon waking… in which I grab my phone and type it in. Actually, the same goes for music, too… Many times, I dream about a song, and I wake up with it in my head. So, I grab my phone and record myself humming it. Sometimes, the next morning, however, I listen to what I hummed, or what I typed… and I think to myself… GEEZ! What was I thinking ?! haha

Music Junkie Press: If you could go back to your 14 year old self, what advice would you give to yourself?

Shiloh: Hmmm… I think I would tell myself to save more money. I hate to say that, but as a teenager, I really never worried about saving money. I lived for the moment, and I spent the money I made on whatever I wanted at the time. While I don’t regret squandering all my money on video games and going out to diners, my musical career sure would be a lot easier if I could afford to travel, and to tour, and to invest into my music… into my Brand.

Music Junkie Press: With the overabundance of the digital age, do you ever find yourself needing to disconnect digitally or do you fully embrace the technology, etc.?

Shiloh: I actually fully embrace the digital age. This is where the future is. I do like cds- a physical copy of music that means something to me. My dream has always been to have cd’s in stores. I love the booklets and liner notes… but, cds are almost obsolete. I could dwell upon how things were… and be miserable, or I could just embrace how things have become. It is “do or die” in this industry, and I cannot afford to stay in the past.

Music Junkie Press: Can you tell us a little bit about how you first started writing and getting involved in music?

Shiloh: Well, growing up, my parents had a piano in the house. Ever since I can remember, I was sitting at the piano with my legs dangling off of the piano bench… my tiny fingers barely able to play a whole chord. I always hummed. I actually didn’t find out until 4^th grade that other people could actually hear me hum. I thought until then that the sound never escaped my head lol. So, music has always been within me. At the age of 12, I watched a movie called, “Great Balls of Fire.” It was a biography of Jerry Lee Lewis. After watching it, I taught myself how to play “rock n roll” or “boogie woogie.” It came fairly easy. I just practiced almost 24 hours a day !!! I would play the imaginary keyboard on my desk at school, or on the dinner table. So, after a few years of playing and practicing piano, I began to write songs with lyrics.

Music Junkie Press: With so many changes in the music industry today, if you could single-handedly change something, what would it be?

Shiloh: I just wish that it was about talent, good music/songs, and not about how much money you have, who your parents are/were, or which Disney show you were on as a kid…
