What Happened Miss Simone nails the tragic life and changing times of Nina Simone. Review by Patrick O’Heffernan

June 26, 2015

Oscar-nominated director Liz Garbus has a talent for putting viewers inside the heads and lives of celebrities like no one else.  She has done it with Marilyn Monroe and Bobby Fischer, and now she has done it with the singer/activist Nina Simone. Garbus has produced a spellbinding documentary film that goes far beyond the genre “documentary” by editing together new and existing footage from the tumultuous life of this 50’s 60’s “Queen of Soul”.  The result is a masterpiece of both documentary film making and storytelling.   There is music, more than 25 songs and a live clip of Simone at the 1978 Montreux Festival, footage that documented the  launch of her career and encapsulated the complexity of her life. However this is not a concert film or even a music film;  it is the story of the woman who began life as Eunice Waymon from Tryon New Jersey, changed her name to Nina –  Spanish for little girl – Simone – after the actress Simone Signoret – in order to hide her piano [Read More]

Earthside release a drum playthrough video of the track “The Closest I’ve Come”

June 26, 2015

Progressive cinematic rockers Earthside have released a great drum playthrough video by Ben Shanbrom for their song, The Closest I’ve Come. The song is off their upcoming debut album, A Dream In Static. Ben comments, “One thing I love about instrumental tracks is that you can use the song title in itself to tell a story that all listeners can interpret differently. For me, ‘The Closest I’ve Come’ is about proving yourself to yourself – overcoming the mental voices that say that you aren’t worthy or ‘can’t do it.’ While it’s one of the older songs on the record, it remains one of the most intense pieces for me to play live. I purposefully wrote parts for it that would challenge me and force me to improve as a player and overall musician.”  Check out the video here: The new album, A Dream in Static was recorded in Stockholm, Sweden under the watch of renowned producer and mix engineer, David Castillo (Opeth, Katatonia, Bloodbath), and additional mix and mastering engineer, Jens Bogren (Opeth, Soilwork, The Ocean, [Read More]
