Last night at Shoreline Amphitheatre, we were taken back in time with a stellar performance from John Mellencamp. Mellencamp brought his Dancing Words – The Greatest Hits Tour to Mountain View, and it was nothing short of extraordinary.
Backed by his full band, Mellencamp delivered a performance where every musician was completely on point. There was such a cohesion between them that you could feel it throughout the entire show. Mellencamp doesn’t just perform to the crowd, he plays off his band, interacts with them and clearly appreciates what each of them brings to the stage. That connection made the night feel even more special.
He kicked off the set with “Lawless Times,” with the lyrics filling the backdrop behind him as the crowd sang along. It was the perfect kickoff to a night that nobody would soon forget.
From there, it became hit after hit, emotion after emotion, and one incredible moment after another.
You couldn’t help but feel like you had stepped into a time machine. With each song came a different memory, a place, a person, a moment in your life when that song meant something to you. That’s the power of Mellencamp’s music. These songs have lived alongside us for decades, and hearing them live brings all of those memories rushing right back.
And Mellencamp sounded so damn good.
He gives everything when he performs. There is so much passion behind his voice and every word he sings. One of the highlights of the night was “Lonely Ol’ Night.” The fervor that took over the crowd was incredible.
Then came one of the most beautiful moments of the evening when Mellencamp performed an acoustic “Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First).” It was raw, passionate and absolutely amazing. He followed it with an acoustic “Jack & Diane,” and hearing thousands of people singing those familiar words together was one of those concert moments you just want to hold onto.
Following the intermission, the second set came roaring back with the Johnny Cougar years and “I Need a Lover.” Once again, we were transported back in time.
Another song that really hit me was “Your Life Is Now.” It’s one of those songs that wakes you up and reminds you that this is it. Don’t wait for tomorrow. Don’t spend your life looking backward. Live for now.
And maybe that’s one of the reasons Mellencamp’s music has remained so powerful for so long.
They’re not just lyrics.
They’re words, thoughts, emotions and passion all put together in a way that hits you somewhere deeper. His songs make you think. They open your eyes to things and invite you to feel like you’re part of something bigger than yourself.
I think we need a lot more of that in this world.
There aren’t many concerts where I walk out genuinely wishing the exact same show was happening again the next night so I could turn around and do it all over again. This was one of them.
