Today I was treated to a special afternoon filled with some KICK ASS Rock and Roll!!! I recently received the new CD by Red9 “Under Dark Skies”. It was a perfect sunny afternoon spent sitting outside and set the CD on play….. Then it began… Under Dark Skies…
The first song Hold Your Own brings such a great Sabbath/Ozzy sound that just wakes you your senses and demands you take a listen. Great first song that has you looking forward to more. Patterns comes in next with an incredible drum and bass intro that just leads into an incredible rhythm that just sustains throughout the song. You are now just getting started and ready to rock and roll.
Song 3 is Ignoramus and has a dark edgy sound with an exuberant build up that just delivers another well composed song. You continue on with Lead on and Mother that has me scouring the internet to find out when their next show is. I am starting to get cravings for their live shows! We saw them last year open for Slash at the Wiltern in Los Angeles and were blown away. Now am I am desperate to get to another show!
Dead Heads has a heavier intense intro and I just love the vocals on it. On One In the Same you really get a Toolesque sound that highlights the slow progressive metal. It is funny because I have never been a fan of Tool (don’t send the hate mail!) but honestly Red9 delivers a sound similar to Tool in this song that I just love and actually just might be one of my favorites of the CD.
Next up is definitely my favorite…. Hurts Like Home. Damn! This song just delivers a shadowy dark sound that has the mystery of The Cure meets Nirvana. Truly a great fusion of styles that brings out the mysterious side of Red9. It amazes me whwn I realize that they are just 3 guys! The deliver such a huge sound and you can really feel it on this one! You then can heavy it up with Slipstream that also brings a modern punk/metal feel. Underdose comes on and you know you are at the end of the album, but then it slaps you in the face with the intense drumming and you are ready to go at it all over again. It literally is like the best send off you can ever receive. Just in your face drumming, high octane energy that pulses through your veins. It just enters you and takes over… You are ready to start all over and press replay…You are now under the Red9 spell of Rock!
Just when you sit back and take a deep breath after all that ear porn… you get treated to a bonus track of Slipstream pt. 2. I won’t spoil this one for you, but you are going to love it!
These guys are a powerhouse of rock and adrenaline. Red9 is Paul ‘Friz” Frislie on guitars, Giovanni ‘Gio” Fuentes and Jeff on bass and vocals. Together they create a true rock sound and I am hoping for a Bay Area show soon. I am going to need my Red9 Fix! They have a sound similar to Tool and a grungier Nine Inch Nails. Jeff on bass really captivates you with his exploding bass lines and his vocals. Paul just exudes energy while he is ripping out blazing riffs. Gio brings it all together with his sold heavy drumming. Together they create great rock and roll. “Under Dark Skies” is an incredibly well composed album that deserves to be on your play list! So what are you doing sitting here? You should be heading over to Amazon, Itunes or CD Baby to get this awesome CD from Red9! Definitely one for the playlist! I think I might have to head over there myself since tonight my son, Rockin Ryan has officially stolen my CD! He has band practice tonight and they are rockin out right now to Dead Hands!….. Ahhh…. I love my work… even more… I love having kids who love ROCK ~n~ ROLL!!!!
~ Crank it up loud,
Marisol
