Defences announce new album and share new single “False Gods”

Hertfordshire based Alternative-Metal band Defences announce their new album “In The Balance”, which will be released October 15th, 2021.

The band also revealed the rough, beautiful and confrontative new single “False Gods”.

“In The Balance” is a snapshot of experiences, that Cherry Duesbury made over the last years. She looks at the unavoidable difficulties of a global pandemic as well as different cultural key events. “We wrote this because we had to”, Cherry explains. “In The Balance” is the result of the search of Defences for hope in the harsh realities of life, which they approach head-on, to find positivity.

“A great amount of the lyrics are based on inner fights”, co-vocalist William Alex Young explains. It is a snapshot of the time, that shows humanity in their glory as well as their fights. “It’s incredibly honest”, Cherry adds. “It’s the most honest I ever wrote, concerning lyrics.”

This honesty also finds itself again on the newest work of the band, “False Gods”. Inspired by the “Black Lives Matter” movement, Cherry uses her personal reaction to comment on all of humanity. “I have listened to Calums demo on repeat at that time. I never planned to write about this”, she remembers. “It was the day after a demonstration on that hill, where I spent my Friday nights as a teenager. It was full of people, and when I saw the pictures and videos, I started to cry. I couldn’t believe, that so many people so close to my home showed their support. This made me think about all of us just being humans. So I wanted to write a song about people and to confront some of them for their behaviour.”

This hope boils under the surface of “InThe Balance” and underpins the attitude of Defences as a band. The songs are a celebration of how people handle things that happen in their life, how they understand those experiences and recognise, what they can learn from them in the end. And they do this with powerful energy, that perfectly connects the double vocals with the detuned instrumentation.

Cherry looks back at the hourglass, the heart and the scales of justice on the artwork of the record and comments: “It is a time capsule for this moment in our lives, in every life. It’s about experiences, the difficulties, the fights we all go through and the hope we find in the end.”
