It is Christmas Eve and we are at the Day 10 of 12 Days of Vocalists. Today I would like to honor a vocalist who not only brings a paramount of emotion to life when he sings but has also been the soundtrack to many of my life’s ups and downs. That is the supremely talented, Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October. There is something so purely magical when Justin sings, his heartfelt passion shines through to the listener and creates an everlasting connection. He brings them hope, helps them, quiets their frustration, comforts them, ignites a passion within them, and is that little voice in your head telling you that it will all be okay. Maybe it is the fact that through his music, he has dealt with so many issues, struggles, celebrations, etc. Through his emotionally driven lyrics he has invited us all into his world and his songs in return, help each and every one of us when we are faced with our own challenges. He is vulnerable, raw, passionate, and completely honest with his music.
I myself can draw on certain instances in my life where the voice of Justin was there for me. During the last days of my father’s life, I was at his bedside for nearly two weeks, only to head home to send my husband off to work and the kids to school. During those minutes on my ride home from the hospital/home I would listen to Into the Ocean. Odd choice some might say, but it was the song that became the glue for what was my breaking heart as I was losing my father. I felt I was drowning and I was just about breaking down. That song gave me the strength to face another day even if it was the day that I was going to lose my best friend, my hero, my father. That is just one example of many. It is for times like those, that a simple thank you wouldn’t suffice for their gift of music.
I have talked to many others who are part of the Blue Family about the music of Blue October and how Justin’s voice was always there to help them, heal, give hope and inspire. I hope you take the time out of your day to listen to Justin and hear his magical beautiful voice come to life in song. You just may find his voice and songs have something for you to hear and could be the start of a bright new day.
Blue October have just announced dates for the Fear Tour set for Spring 2015. The tour is set to start on April 8th at the Orpheum Theater in Flagstaff, Arizona and will wrap up on May 16th at Stubbs in Austin, Texas. Tickets are already on sale and I hope you get a chance to catch their fantastic performance. Every time I leave a Blue October concert, I catch myself saying the exact same thing… I never thought they could exceed how excellent they were at their last performance and every time, they prove me wrong.
Make sure to visit the social media sites and check the tour dates to see if you can catch this great concert. Get your tickets early because you don’t want to miss it. I will leave you with a slide show of some amazing photos by Rockin Ryan from the concert as well as a tribute video for Calling You from the San Francisco show last year and Say It from the Sacramento show. (also some live videos from Sacramento at bottom)
~ Enjoy, Marisol
