Review of Maggie’s Magic at the Hotel Cafe by Patrick O’Heffernan

February 12, 2014

MAGGIE ‘S MAGIC AT THE HOTEL CAFÉ Review by Patrick O’Heffernan, Host of Music FridayLive! Hotel Café,  Hollywood, Saturday night.  If you were in Los Angeles this was the place to be.  Canadian-born, LA-based, soul pop singer Maggie (aka All About Maggie) was introducing her new single “Tidal Waves and Hurricanes” with a high-powered concert and a screening of the new song video.  You did not want to miss this show. I got there a little before 8 pm for the 9 pm gig and the crowd was already filing in.  Maggie and her band – Sam Campbell on drums,  Nate Evans on rhythm guitar/background vocals, Mike Minjarez on bass guitar/keys/background vocals, Kyle Calvillo on lead guitar, and special guest Jarrett Furst on the carbon graphite cello were hanging out on the floor chatting with friends as  the James Apollo Five finished up their set and the country singer Dawn McCoy came on. As McCoy sang her last song, there was a surge of Maggie fans through the door.  Every chair was filled and [Read More]

Check out the new video by Cage9 for “A Million Miles Below the Earth”

February 11, 2014

I just finished watching the fantastic new video by Cage9 for their song, “A Million Miles Below the Earth”!  Director and editor Jacob Voelzke takes us on a cinematic journey exposing us to his dark vision of a  Kurzweilian future where technology blurs the lines between death.  Excellent work and an amazingly bad ass rockin song. I love the bass line in this one and the vocals are purely engaging. I can’t get enough of this one. Check out the video here:   If you don’t already have it, make sure to pick up the new album by Cage9, How To Shoot Laser From your Eyes. You can head straight over to their Bandcamp page here and BUY IT NOW! It is filled with non stop hard rock that demands to be heard! Make sure to visit their social media sites and stay up to date on their latest news. ~ Marisol Information & Links: Website:  www.cage9.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/Cage9 Twitter: www.twitter.com/cage9 Bandcamp: http://cage9.bandcamp.com/album/how-to-shoot-lasers-from-your-eyes Itunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/how-to-shoot-lasers-from-your/id572415368

You can check out their lyric video here:   “Kill Hicks” is off of their new album,  the sun’s not yellow, it’s chicken which set to release on March 11th via Spartan Records. Tony Gonzahl, guitarist/vocalist explains more about the song, “”Kill Hicks” was one of the last songs we finished up for the record, and it came together fast. We had this kind of bluegrass influenced riff kicking about for a little while, but hadn’t really had the chance to do much with it. Then one day we started jamming and that riff came up. A couple of hours later we had the song pretty much [Read More]

Review of Maggie’s Tidal Waves and Hurricanes by Patrick O’Heffernan

February 11, 2014

Review of Tidal Waves and Hurricanes by Maggie Patrick O’Heffernan – Host, Music FridayLive! I don’t usually review singles, but once in while something comes along that deserves a second listen and a thoughtful review.  This time it’s the song, “Tidal Waves and Hurricanes”  by the LA-based Canadian singer/songwriter, Maggie. Maggie and “Tidal Waves and Hurricanes”  are a phenomenon, there is no other way to put it. First, the song.  Maggie is releasing it tonight, Feb. 7, 2014, at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles, along with a video.  The show starts at 9 pm and should be a barn-burner.  The music is infectious – perfectly crafted to stimulate all those parts of your brain that respond to sound and pleasure.  With a hypnotic, but not overpowering, drumbeat, and all of the hooks and guitar and keyboard details  and overdubs of world-class pop,  “Tidal Waves and Hurricanes”  pulls you into its orbit and swings you around like a carnival ride. At the same time, it transcends pop in its lyrics.  Maggie’s website tells us that her [Read More]

Don’t miss Craig Owens of Chiodos February StageIt Show

February 10, 2014

Chiodos singer, Craig Owens will be doing his second of his monthy Stageit shows for 2014!  Craig really enjoys the intimate experience that Stageit shows allows. Craig explains, “There are two ways that really resonate with me, in what I enjoyed about the last Stage It experience. First of all, playing these online shows are all about the fans. Reconnecting with them, on a personal and vulnerable level, is an overwhelmingly enjoyable, rewarding, and adventurous experience each time I get to do something like this. I think it breaks down the walls of the artist / fan relationship in ways that a rock performance with Chiodos could never do.”  He continues, “The other side comes from a more personal perspective. The truth is, I just love making music. I love being creative. I love performing. I love singing, and I love playing guitar. Any chance I get to be creative, I take it and run. So any time I have a chance to grab a guitar, and sing in front of people that care – [Read More]
