KXM release self titled debut album that will have you begging for more

March 10, 2014

Now and days many musicians have side projects or are in several bands at the same time. We all remember the time, when side projects could signify a band break up or member replacements but now, it is a welcome change. For many passionate musicians time spent off the road or not recording, can cause them to be a bit stir-crazy. Sometimes you just have to unleash your passion and create the music.  I love finding out about new bands whether they are new to the scene, supergroups or a one-off side project. One new supergroup that have successfully harnessed their passion and created a MUST HAVE album, is KXM. KXM  is comprised of dUg Pinnick (King’s X), George Lynch (Lynch Mob/Dokken) and Ray Luzier (Korn). These three guys who were first friends and then decided to make music together have created a band that will definitely want you begging for more. After taking a listen to their self titled debut album, I couldn’t help but get excited for a tour and even more music. Whether they [Read More]

Ani DiFranco mesmerizes Napa with her passionate and heartfelt set

March 9, 2014

It was a magical night at the Uptown Theater in Napa, California yesterday. It was a night filled with love, hope, inspiration and sweet beautiful music. Ani DiFranco, the amazingly talented singer/songwriter/poet was in the house to perform her final show of her tour. First, I must share that the ambiance that the Uptown Theater creates was the perfect backdrop for this stellar performance. The Uptown Theater has a very strict photo policy which you don’t really appreciate until you experience it firsthand. Going to about 15 concerts a month, I tend to spend so much time bobbing my head side to side in hopes of capturing the performer in my line of site, but instead I am greeted by cell phones and cameras in the air.  Without the distractions of these, you can’t help but bathe in the beauty of the artist and become one with the moment. Last night was that perfect night. Her impressive opener, Jenny Scheinman woed the crowd with her touching and sometimes jovial folk songs. The crowd was purely [Read More]

Korby Lenker at Hotel Café: a cinnamon tinted daguerreotype evening. by Patrick O’Heffernan

March 8, 2014

Korby Lenker at Hotel Café: a cinnamon tinted daguerreotype evening. by Patrick O’Heffernan, Host, Music FridayLive! You knew the show by Korby Lenker was going to be an entertaining adventure before he even got on stage; the pedal box mounted on a skateboard sitting next to the microphone stand gave him away. And the adventure started the minute this curly-headed, mischievous grinning minstrel walked out in a wine-red velvet jacket, jeans and bow tie and said “hi”. Lenker has explained that what he does is make music that’s easily likeable but with a kind of secret sophistication.  He pulls it off well, which is why he has opened for bands like Willie Nelson, Ray LaMontagne, Nickel Creek and Keith Urban, among others. Everything he does – and did Friday night at the Hotel Café – is entertaining, hummable and deeply layered. He started the show off gentle and soft with simple chords for a haunting effect on “If I Prove False”, hitting the long high notes in a way that evoked memories and images of [Read More]

The ROAMies at Hotel Café by Patrick O’Heffernan

March 8, 2014

The ROAMies at Hotel Café by Patrick O’Heffernan Music lovers at the Hotel Café discovered that the way you spell fun is R-O-A-M-i-e-s, as in the ROAMies, the delightful married duo of Alexa James and Rory Partin.  They had the audience rocking, clapping, laughing and singing for almost an hour with a 9-song set that ran the gamut from original songs to early Beatles to Cajun classics. Alexa James – who is a song writing and vocal power in her own right with several hit albums, a number 1 single and 5 top ten songs, not to mention several film tracks and a new single out now,   “I Don’t Know How To Be Here”- kicked things off with a conversational nod to Mardi Gras and the upbeat happy tune “Fun To Love You” on the guitar.  Her husband Rory backed her  on the keyboard and Peter Cho added to the lightheartedness with his wicked banjo chops.  You knew immediately, the evening was going to be fun! With her Betty Boop eyes, curly crown of bright [Read More]
