Vattica release thought provoking new video for Air-Conditioned Life

December 23, 2014

Rockers from Hollywood,  Vattica have just released a new video for their song, Air-Conditioned Life.  The  band says, “the new video which focuses on the issues of wealth inequality, class warfare, racial profiling, the ever-growing police state and  was made as a commentary to the dark times we live in.”  Check out the video here: I know to the youth of today may feel that we are faced with heavy and dark times, but with each generation we all had experienced tumultuous times and often feared the world we lived in. I can recall the uncertainty of growing up in the Cold War era of the 80’s and wondering what kind of world we lived in back then. My father would tell us stories of the Depression and living through the World Wars. One thing is for sure, anytime we have faced dark times, the gift of music has been there to comfort us, ignite us with a passion to make a change or to just bring a much needed break from everything. It seems that with [Read More]

Day 8 of our 12 Days of Vocalists goes to Manny Velez of BullyWest

December 22, 2014

For our Day 8 on our 12 Days of Vocalists I am taking the spotlight  local to a voice that comes from Oakland but is sure to be heard everywhere! That is the stellar vocals of Manny Velez of BullyWest. BullyWest, an indie rock band from Oakland  and if you are not familiar with them, you will be. The powerful trio of determined rockers deliver a sound that blends everything from grunge/rock/alternative/blues/americana and classic rock into their own unique style, they will truly capture your attention.  Manny Velez not only gives a 150% on his vocals but is also ferocious on guitar. From the first time I heard his voice, I was blown away. Manny‘s voice reminds me of a blend of Jim Morrison and Chris Cornell and a side of Glenn Danzig,  it will take you by surprise from the moment you first hear him. Then, you can’t wait to hear more of him. It is so apparent that Manny is passionate with his music and he brings that out in each and every song [Read More]

My next door neighbor growing up, she made me a ‘New Kids on the Block’ t-shirt. And she was dead-serious about it. I’m talking, she cut out and glued pictures from magazines, puffy paint, sparkles — the whole deal. To this day, I still don’t know what her motivation was…maybe she was sick in the head or just plain sick of my Nirvana and Alice in Chains shirts?? Needless to say, I got some GREAT use out of that gift, hahahaha!! What [Read More]

Day 7 of our 12 Days of Vocalists goes to Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil

December 21, 2014

We are very excited to announce our Day 7 featured vocalist as Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil. This is one amazing woman with a powerful voice that truly ignites energy in a crowd and emotions in your heart.  Cristina is stunning on stage as she captivates her crowd and always gives a 150% of herself at each and every show. Her vocal range is superb and she has this way of truly connecting with the listener and their emotions which is somewhat hard to do when you are dealing with hard rock and metal. For Cristina, it appears to come so easy as her voice takes you on a musical journey that you don’t want to end.  She can deliver deep powerful lyrics as well as serenade with sweet angelic tones, simply beautiful!  She is also a beautiful person inside and out and has a charming personality that just lights up any room she enters.  Check out the interview with did with Cristina earlier this year in Sacramento at the Ace of Spades:   [Read More]

MITRE. Music that transcends language

December 20, 2014

By Patrick O’Heffernan, Host, Music Friday Live!  There is a world of south-of-the-border Spanish-language music that many English speaking fans are unaware of.  Along with the traditional cumbia, and mariachi and banda, Latin popular music includes  rock,  rap, Mexican ska, pop and electronic, among other forms.  A generation of  Latin artists is emerging who  are creating endless combinations of traditional and  modern, singing in both English and Spanish, blending old-country and contemporary music forms into a new genre, Latin-Gringo rock. There are a few  musicians in this emerging generation – a very few – whose  songwriting and performing transcend language – who can strike you deeply whether or not you can understand the lyrics.  Such an artist is Mitre, whose eponymous album was released this week at a celebration held  in the Gibson showroom in Beverly Hills accompanied by the band Posadas De Los Muertos. Mitre blends the color and form of Mexico with modern instrumentation and sensibilities, moving effortless from traditional to current in a new genre, MitreMusic. Mitre brings these traditions together through his astonishing voice, [Read More]
