Time to start drooling for the new PRS Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar

June 3, 2015

Okay, guitarists and guitar enthusiasts, begin to drool over the new release from Paul Reed Smith for their P245 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar. The new PRS is a vintage-inspired single-cutaway guitar designed for players who prefer shorter scale necks. Details:  The 24.5” scale length combined with 22 frets offers classic PRS style in an easy to handle format. This versatile instrument also features the LR Baggs/PRS piezo system, providing players with both electric guitar tones and authentic acoustic tones in one instrument. With two output jacks, the P245 can be plugged directly into an electric or acoustic amplifier or DI into a soundboard. By utilizing the separate blend control, the tone of the P245’s 58/15 pickups can also be combined with acoustic sounds through a single output. The P245 is one of the first models to feature the new 58/15 treble and bass pickups, which were personally designed by Paul Reed Smith. 58/15’s are a vintage style pickup with exceptional clarity and focused midrange. These pickups paired with a shorter 24.5” scale length and 22 frets, give [Read More]

Maggie Szabo road tests “Forgive and Forget” at BMI Acoustic Lounge. By Patrick O’Heffernan

June 3, 2015

One of the many helpful things the non-profit music rights organization BMI does is produce showcases and events that spotlight new artists and gives a boost to the careers of artists ready to go to the next level.  In LA this takes many forms, including a monthly BMI Acoustic Lounge at the Genghis Cohen venue featuring four artists with only guitar or keyboard accompaniment.   This weeks’ BMI Acoustic Lounge featured emerging artists Melie Malavasi, Shyanne, Jordan Casty and the established singer/songwriter Maggie Szabo, whose career took off with the release of her single “Tidal Waves and Hurricanes” last year. The pews at GC’s were packed and the back of the room was SRO as each performer moved through the BMI protocol of sing a song, wait for the others to sing and then sing another, for a total of three songs each.   As is always the case, each artist was talented and ready. Casty, the only male singer on the stage, performed not only well, but with humor and a smile that [Read More]

The Silent War band: nothing silent about the music or the message. By Patrick O’Heffernan

June 3, 2015

One of the joys of the LA music scene – the largest and best in the nation (sorry, New York and Nashville) is that you can just wander into a club and run into top tier talent, and not only top tier, but unique and exciting in ways that you just won’t find anywhere else.  I had a night off this week and stopped into my favorite showcase club, The Hotel Café in Hollywood, and found myself at a front table about six feet away from two black-clad and tattooed women with rhythm guitars who led an alt rock band that is still ringing in my ears days later, in a good way, The band was The Silent War, led by Garrison Starr and Adrianne Gonzalez and there is nothing silent about them. Each of their 11 songs had the fully packed house rocking out or breath-held quiet. The duo, who have been in a residency at the Hotel Café, opened up with Setting Sun looking at each other knowingly as they asked “when are [Read More]
