Mary Scholz is back, more beautiful, more edgy and stronger than ever at Room 5 Lounge. By Patrick O’Heffernan

August 3, 2015

West Hollywood. Last year when I reviewed Mary Scholz’s live performance at Hollywood’s Hotel Café, I wrote,  “To see Mary Scholz is to fall in love…  you want to spend the rest of your life listening to her”.  I saw her sing live again this weekend and I am still in love. After eight months on the road she has become even more beautiful, more edgy and stronger on stage than ever.  Her performance at the Room 5 Lounge on Saturday night showed us a more mature song writer, a  more confident performer and an artist completely at ease with making everyone in the room fall in love with her.  And they did.   Scholz treated the room – which was packed with friends, fans and family, judging from the cheering and banter – with 12 songs, most of them new tunes that she wrote while on the road, plus a few from her previous albums. After a mic check and some friendly banter, she quieted the room with her achingly melancholy “Mournful Noise” from [Read More]

Concert Review: Armored Saint w. Scullwinx, Midriff and Mystic Prophecy in Munich. By Alex Bock

August 3, 2015

Munich, Backstage Halle, August 2, 2015   Well here’s another Free & Easy date I was really looking forward to. Armored Saint came to town yesterday. They were supported by two bands from Germany, Scullwinx and Mystic Prophecy. Third opening act and second on the bill was Midcliff, a rock band from Austria. Scullwinx: Mystic Prophecy: Midriff:  A black curtain hid the view to the stage, when finally it was lifted at about 10.30 pm. Armored Saint started out with ‘Win Hands Down’ the title track to their recent release. It was a 15 song set list. The show lasted about 90 minutes, which again is more than you usually get lately at concerts. They played new songs from WHD, like ‘Mess’ and ‘An Exercise in Debauchery’, but also songs from their first full length ‘March Of The Saints’ like the title track itself , ‘Can U Deliver’and ‘Madhouse’, with which they closed their set that night. I didn’t have to wait long into the set for my all time fave AS song ‘Last [Read More]

Chris Wyse and Jason Achilles Mezilis of OWL interview: we are doing what we want and having fun. By Patrick O’Heffernan

August 1, 2015

If you are fortunate enough to get up close and personal with the band OWL during a live show, don’t be surprised if bassist Chris Wyse puts his foot up on the monitor in front of your face and looks down at you with a fiendish grin, or if Jason Achilles Mezilis swipes your camera lens and uses it for a bottleneck on his guitar. That’s what happened to me at their show recently at Hollywood’s renowned Whiskey A Go Go. OWL is a contradiction in terms: a melodic hard rock band. They can attack you with metal-like ferocity while making you laugh and sing. I have seen a lot of great bands – pop, hard rock, blues and metal –  but none of them can do what OWL does. I can’t explain it, but Chris Wyse and Jason Achilles Mezilis stopped by the studio to try to make it crystal clear. Patrick.  Let’s start with the new EP, Things you Can’t See.  Why has it taken so long?  You started this, I think, [Read More]
