The 80’s not only had some great Rock and Roll but it also provided a time to enjoy New Wave and Modern Rock music. Well those times are long gone…. But guess what, there is a great new band out there called The Kinected that is bringing it all back to life, blended with their own unique sound that is taking the airwaves by storm. It is great feel good music that reminds me of the first time I heard Pet Shop Boys or Duran Duran. They have an amazing sound that is a fresh blend of rock, pop, funk and an electro edge. There first single “Hypnotize” from their new album titled Evolution #9 has been dominating airplay on XM Sirius Channel 3 “20 on 20”. It will have you moving and wanting more and more!
The Kinected is Ron Anthony on vocals, Alex Zapatier on guitar, Mike B on bass and Marck Mangel on drums. I had the opportunity to interview vocalist Ron Anthony who has such a smooth voice on this album. Here is a bit of that interview:
Music Junkie Press: We have heard about how you are all so unique and wanted to know how you all got together to form the band?
Ron: Well, let’s see. I don’t know if you are aware but Michael the bass player happens to be my brother so we met at birth, Alex the guitar player is my cousin so we have known each other for a long time and the drummer Marck is a very, very good friend of ours. We met Marck a couple years ago and were getting together and just started jamming out and it evolved to what is now The Kinected. But a majority of the band is family.
Music Junkie Press: We understand that you released in February your debut album, “Evolution #9″ and I had the pleasure of listening to it, and it has a fresh style of music with a great blend. What could you tell us about this new album?
Ron: Thank you, thank you very much! We appreciate that. Evolution #9 is exciting for us. It is like a first child for us. We spent a solid amount of time on it. I think what we have taken from this is the ability to understand in a studio how to work with each other. But as far as the music, it is really a sincerer blend of our biggest influences with which we have grown up on and what we love. We are all classic musician artists at heart. We love the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, but as a keyboard player I love the New Wave, 80’. I love Depeche Mode, The Cure, Duran, Duran. We recorded this in my studio and we produced it and engineered it ourselves so I had a little bit of room to kind of get the 80s synth world vibe with what Alex brings with his guitars. So it is really kind of a blend of some of our biggest influences along with lyrics that we can all relate to form our personal experiences in our lives. It was cool and we were really happy with the way it came together. We are really excited to get it out there.
Music Junkie Press: Your music brings a positive energy. You can feel the passion and intensity that all you guys put into this music. S many people talk about how music changes their mood and can help them through times. Your music brings that positive element to the listener. How old were you when you started getting the music bug?
Ron: My first piano lesson was when I was six years old. I have been doing it for a little bit of time and as I got older I started experimenting more with the keyboards because it allowed me to have an outlet other than just the piano and experiment with different sounds. I got really into studying and listening to bands like Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire and Herbie Hancock. Studying them and understanding some of that synth and analog world and it intrigued me. From that I went on to build my studio, and writing and producing so I have been doing it for quite a while since I was six.
Music Junkie Press: From where you are today with all your life experiences, what would your advice be to your 14 year old self?
Ron: If I could advise my old self at 14 I would probably say to him to not get so preoccupied with a million other things. When I was 14 I wanted to do what the average 14 year old did which is good. You need to be social and do that. But, in school I wanted to do everything . I wanted to be on the baseball team, I wanted to hang out with all the girls in my grade, video games, parties, and everything. If I could go back I would have wanted to utilize more of that time knowing what I do now and put it towards a goal in music and a central focus. But also, I would just say play away because there are so many people who like to be critics and criticize and have an opinion on what to do with your music when you are 14 or even now. I think you just need to stay focused and stay true to what you want to do and what your vision is. It is very easy to be swayed at that age so just be true to yourself.
Music Junkie Press: That is great advice. With the 80’s and 90’s making a comeback, if you could pick a song from the 80s or 90s to describe your life what would that be?
Ron: That is a hard question. Lyrically, I would need time to answer that. But if it was to be a band that I connected with growing up, I would have to say U2. I have always admired U2 and what the band did and what Bono sung about. Maybe Bad by U2. That is probably one of the songs growing up that inspired me the most and lyrically I still think I connect with it. So if I had to say really quick, it is Bad by U2.
Music Junkie Press: We are definitely going to spread the word out about The Kinected. We will post all your links so everyone can get to know your music and hopefully get you all out here on the West Coast soon. We will get the links to your Facebook and website pages and Itunes so they can download Hypontize and the whole album.
Ron: Yes, that would be great. We manage all of our social networking sites so we would like to have people come check us and leave us a message. It is spelled KINECTED, the band name was a combination of a couple words we really liked which is Kinetic and connection. So a lot of people ask us about how to spell it. So have everyone shoot us a message and we look forward to responding to everyone.
