Countdown to new EP by Southerland Nights and interview with Adam!

SoutherlandNights

We are counting down the days to the release of Southerland Night‘s new EP, Destroy Something Beautiful. This three piece rock band from Houston, Texas has an incredible devout following that are aptly called The Accolade. Once  you take a listen to their emotionally driven high energy alternative rock, you will have no other choice than to join us and be part of The Accolade.  Their music reminds me of what would be a cross between early David Bowie and Thirty Second To Mars with a side of Depeche Mode.

The band consists of singer/guitarist Adam Elara, bassist Andy Nova and drummer Stephen Adwell. They recently released a very heartwarming and uplifting video for their song, “Here I Am“. You can watch the video here:

We had the opportunity to interview Adam and we are pleased to bring that interview to you:

Music Junkie Press: How old were you when you first started playing music?

Adam: I was 14 when Andy (our bassist) taught me how to start playing the guitar.

Music Junkie Press: What was the first song you ever learned how to play in its entirety?

Adam: I think it was Coma White by Marilyn Manson, I had learned bits and pieces of other songs before, but that was the first one I learned straight through.

Music Junkie Press: That is a great first song!!!! I don’t think I have ever heard of anyone’s first song being a Marilyn Manson song. Love it! Growing up what were the most influential artists for you that inspired you to continue into music?

Adam: Oh man, so many artists influenced and continue to influence me as I discover new musicians, painters, and filmmakers that open my mind to create. As far as music goes, I’d say The Cure, The Goo Goo Dolls, U2, and Linkin Park.

Music Junkie Press: Tell us more about your song “Here I am” and the video?

Adam: I wanted to make something that inspired myself to continue through hard times; personally I was facing a lot of difficulties before and during the recording process. We had a lot of messages being sent to us by kids who were telling us how lonely, out casted, hopeless, and depressed they were, and I connected with that so the lyrics just kind of manifested themselves to be inspirational without being super preachy about anything. The video was an idea I had earlier this year, as a result of people from all over the world who wanted us to come and perform for them. We are a brand new band, and getting to leave the country for tour would be difficult, so I thought allowing anyone who lived anywhere in the world to be in our music video would create an awesome experience for both the band and our supporters.

Music Junkie Press: That video is so well done. It really does draw you in to the music. I absolutely love that you brought your music to the people and then had them be part of it as well. I really love that song! If I could peak into your Ipod, what artist or song would I be most surprised at finding in there?

Adam: Hey Sandy by Polaris, it’s a theme song from a 90’s TV show.

Music Junkie Press: Being 14 is such a hard age, if you could go back and give your 14 year old self some advice, what would it be?

Adam: Haha, it only SEEMS like a hard age when you’re 14. Honestly, I wouldn’t say a word, I think that might mess with the space time continuum and create an alternate timeline.

Music Junkie Press: That is so true and a good way to look at it. What are you currently working on?

Adam: Well we just finished our record, and that was an arduous task as we did everything ourselves. Now we are creating a live show for our upcoming tour. The listening experience on the record differs greatly from the live set, should be a lot of fun.

Music Junkie Press: Lastly, if you could share 3 secrets with our Music Junkie Press audience what would they be?

Adam: Oh no, they wouldn’t be secrets at that point now would they? What I can do is say this:

1.    Believe in yourself and work hard

2.    Don’t listen to haters

3.    Follow the Golden Rule

Music Junkie Press:  Those are three great pieces of advice that I think everyone should listen to. Thank you so much for your time and we look forward to hearing more of Southerland Nights.
