New Years Day have definitely had quite a year and it continues to get even better with the release of their highly anticipated album, Malevolence. The album was produced by Erik Ron (The Word Alive, Motionless In White) and is the band’s first release on Another Century Records. It kicks right off with an attention grabbing Kill or Be Killed. Right away, you can hear that this is surely going to be a defining album for New Years Day.
The album bleeds such honesty in the lyrics and provides the perfect outlet for anyone to break away from the confines of their insecurity, self doubt, darkness and anger. It is like the music that blares through a dark tunnel just as you see the light at the end and know things will get better.
Nikki is fierce on his guitar and has you reeling with his riffs. If you have ever seen him live, you will imagine his high energy punk angst with every note he plays. Ash belts out her vocals with a depth that captures every ounce of honesty and vulnerability through every emotion. Left Inside is a personal favorite of mine and you can hear the momentum she gains as her confidence rises and she will triumph over all, as it takes you into Relentless.
The album is powerful, and I can only imagine the therapeutic process it held in recording. The raw emotion is prevalent and instead of covering it up, they embrace every ounce and deliver 150% of it into each and every song. Suffer has such an ethereal touch that wraps around sadness and takes you through a tumultuous sea of darkness, really an amazing track.
Anthem of the Unwanted is a bad ass call to the ones who have ever felt broken and unwanted. It is a true anthem that will have you with your fists in the air and banging your head. Another highlight is Defame Me that packs a punch of energy with an extra shot of adrenaline. From the moment this song was released, everyone was hooked. The album ends with the title track Malevolence and closes on a heavy tone that is perfect to declare that they have risen from the pain and suffering to newer heights.
This album, while not only providing a much needed release for anyone who has ever felt alone in dark times, but will also have everyone take notice of New Years Day and know they aren’t fucking around. They are KICK ASS and their music proves it as well. It is time for everyone to know New Years Day.
