I love new releases of music. What really gets me excited is when I have a band that I found just by them being an opening act for a headliner and have them become one of my favorite bands. It is the excitement that I get when I got to a show and not know anything about the opening bands and then be treated to a true gem of music. That is what happened several years ago as I watched State Line Empire open up for Steven Adler’s then titled band, Adler’s Appetite at the Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco.
State Line Empire quickly became one of our family’s favorite bands with hits like and . They just had everything we were looking for in rock and roll with a hint of metal strewn right in. Fast forward to today and I have to share their new release with you. It is awesome! Sometimes bands come out with a new EP trying to re-invent themselves or just giving you a cookie cutter of their past EP. Not State Line Empire! Their new EP is filled with rockin hits and it is a bit heavier but also just enough old school touches to keep everyone happy.
Their new EP titled “Raise Your Sins” starts off with “Break Me Down“ and starts right off with that heavy guitar and pounding drums that I love. Then Tyson feeds us with his edgy vocals and Dave with his crunchy bass lines. It has a great tempo and is definitely a perfect way to start the EP off.
Next up is a song that I just love, “You’re Someone Else’s Problem Now” It is a bit faster and edgier but just gives off such a great energy. I got to see them play this live at the Whisky earlier this year and they KILLED IT! This song brings some big riffs by Cat and you are just in awe of him and wanting to get more. The lyrics are just KICK ASS and the perfect way anti-love song!
Next up is “One Hit Down” and again you are literally realizing that these guys have truly gotten even more refined with their music. They definitely have been treating us to some of their best work.
“Eye for an Eye” is up next and starts off with a great instrumental intro. The bass is killer in this and has an awesome tempo in line with the precision drumming. Cat brings in some effects on this song and again Tyson spoils us with those awesome vocals.
Now we give you some “Lock and Load” that starts off with a bit more metal, even reminiscent of early Metallica. In no way are they imitating, because State Line Empire definitely has a sound of their own. There is Dave again with his crunchy bass lines playing to Jay’s thumping drumming and brings us into Cat’s shredding guitar work. Cat takes over as Tyson kicks it in with his megaphone/Scott Wieland style vocals. LOVE THIS ONE! Backing vocals are great on this as everyone is spot on with adrenaline and energy. This is one to have you raising your fists to and scream along to.
Lastly, we end with another one of my favorites, “Raise Your Sins“. I also saw them perform this at the Whisky earlier this year and it is incredible live. This song just has a fusion of old style rock with a new feel. It has such a catchy chorus that will have you singing along in no time. Definitely a song that will gain new fans instantly at first listen.
This whole EP is a work of art. I must tip my hat off to you guys. Job Excellently Done!!! It is funny because they talked about recording this album the last time we interviewed them backstage at the Whisky. It is amazing to see what exactly they were talking about and to honestly say, “DAMN GUYS… YOU REALLY KILLED IT WITH THIS ONE!”
