Last week I had told you about the news from Hinder and how lead singer, Austin Winkler was temporarily leaving the tour. You can read more of that post here. Stepping in for him was singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer Marshal Dutton. I had received many emails and messages asking for me about Marshal. I know about Marshal from his role in Drankmore with Jarrod Denton and if you haven’t check them out, you should at http://facebook.com/drankmoremusic. So I was excited to see Marshal coming in and helping the boys in Hinder out. I wanted to also let you all get to know more about Marshal Dutton, so here is our interview:

Music Junkie Press: We understand that you have been filling in for Austin Winkler as he temporarily leaves the tour. We have heard you have been rocking the shows for Hinder and keep up the great work. We wanted everyone to get to know more about you. How has it been going for you?
Marshal Dutton: It’s going great! All the support has been overwhelmingly positive. The Hinder camp is good people and great company. The fans have been super encouraging, so a big thanks to all of you!
Music Junkie Press: I am glad to hear about the great support! I know that right now you are stepping away briefly from Drankmore but can you tell us more about Drankmore and how it formed? I am loving the song “You Got to Me” and can’t wait for more, what do you have in the works?
Marshal Dutton: Jarrod Denton used to tour manager for Faktion and we toured with Hinder a lot at that time. He, Cody and I discovered that we all had a love for country music, so we started writing country songs together, and Cody and I would record and produce them with Jarrod singing. At first, we didn’t really have any intention of putting a band together. But then last summer, Tom Travis (Program Director at 101.9 The Twister, Oklahoma City country radio station) heard “Beer Pressure” and ask if he could spin it…we we’re like, “Hell yea!” Then shortly after that we started getting show offers, so we put the band together and didn’t look back!
Music Junkie Press: Beer Pressure is a great one too! I am going to make sure to include that video for our audience to check it out. You are a very busy person! In addition to Drankmore you run Back Lounge Productions with Cody Hanson Can you share with us how Back Lounge Productions came about?
Marshal Dutton: Cody ask me to come out on the road with Hinder in the summer of ’09 to produce preproduction recordings for the All American Nightmare record. We set up a pro tools rig in the back lounge of the bus and got busy tracking. Hence the name! Then Cody built BarCode Studio in OKC, and we ended up co producing the record there. After that we continued producing for a variety of different artists and formed the company.
Music Junkie Press: Now if people can’t imagine you being any busier, we heard that Faktion may be coming back? I am hoping this is true?
Marshal Dutton: Haha, we actually haven’t made any plans for that, but I still keep in close contact with all the guys and I love working with them, so if the timing and opportunity was right, I wouldn’t be opposed to it! I have plans to do a solo record soon as well, so that may come first though!
Music Junkie Press: Okay, well keep us updated on Faktion and your solo record has us really excited! You definitely have to tell us more about that in the future! Let’s get to know a bit more about you. How old were you when you started playing guitar and singing?
Marshal Dutton: I started playing guitar when I was 14. I wanted to be Angus Young! Haha, I came from a musical family so there was always singing. My mom was in a singing group and I used to go listen to them rehearse. I was always really interested in the harmony singing they did, so when I started playing in bands, I naturally sunk into that role and didn’t do much lead. I was the lead guy in Faktion at first, but we wanted another singer so we could expand and do harmonies, so we got Ryan and I took the harmony/guitar seat again. It wasn’t till the last few years after spending so much time in the studio that I really started taking an interest in lead singing, and that is when I really started taking it seriously and working on it.
Music Junkie Press: Do you remember what is the first song that you learned how to play in its entirety?
Marshal Dutton: The Jack-AC/DC!
Music Junkie Press: That is a great first song! Can you share with us what was your first concert that you went to?
Marshal Dutton: Alabama and the Oak Ridge Boys when I was 5!! I loved it!
Music Junkie Press: So, I see where you started young with your country influences! Nice concert though! If we could peak into your Ipod/Playlist, what artist/song might we be most surprised at finding in there?
Marshal Dutton: I love Katy Perry! I love pop music and I’m a fan of producers like Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Tricky Stewart, Greg Wells etc…so you can pretty much connect the dots!
Music Junkie Press: You have no idea how many times we hear Katy Perry! We have had hard core metal heads answer Katy Perry! We love her here! Here at Music Junkie Press, we always share stories about how music healed us or helped us, changed our mood or just purely energizes us. What would one of your “Go To” Songs that can instantly put you in a great mood?
Marshal Dutton: Third Eye Blind-Faster! Actually, the whole Out Of The Vein record is a goto. I would put it in my top five all time favorites actually! Stephan Jenkins has a way with words and melodies that will forever be dear to my heart. It’s brilliant.
Music Junkie Press: I am sure that album has been a great Go To for a lot of people! Excellent choice! Has two of my favorite songs; “Another Life” and “Faster”. If you could go back and talk to your 14 year old self, what advice would you give to yourself?
Marshal Dutton: Sing lead more often dude!! And don’t drink so much 😉
Music Junkie Press: Lastly, is there anything you would like to share with our audience?
Marshal Dutton: Cody and I have an indie rock project called “The Queened.” We haven’t released any material yet, but check it out when we do! And check out Seabass N’ Tha Fellas too!
Music Junkie Press: That is awesome! Definitely keep us updated on “The Queened” and we will all check out Seabass N’Tha Fellas. Thank you so much for your time and we look forward to all the new music you will bring us and hopefully people can still catch you out on the road with Hinder.

I hope you all get a chance to check out Marshal at the upcoming Hinder shows and I have posted below their upcoming tour dates. In addition, I want to thank you all for the support everyone has given to Marshal, Austin and all the Hinder guys. We have received nothing but great positive responses and that is important to us. It is time in this music industry, today’s world, or even everyday life, where you have to look at only the positive and focus only on the good things. If someone wants to focus on the negative, don’t fight them, challenge them or engage them; just walk away and you will always be left with the positive! Remember one of my favorite quotes:
Positive anything is better than negative nothing.
For now, make sure to check out Marshal on his social media sites for Drankmore. I want to leave you with a great video we found of Hinder with guest vocals by Marshal Dutton performing “What Ya Gonna Do” live at their recent show at the Coast West Music Fest in Muskegon, MI on July 6th. Marshal is doing awesome and we Welcome him to the Freak Show!
~ Enjoy, Marisol
