Scott Stapp gives a great performance at the intimate venue Harlows’s in Sacramento. By Ben Mitchell

The other night, I got to see one of the most iconic voices in rock and roll: Scott Stapp! The famed and controversial vocalist for the post-grunge rock band Creed came into Sacramento on his solo acoustic tour. To much surprise, the singer kept it very low-key and played at Harlow’s nightclub, which is a VERY small venue for a singer who has sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

Opening the show was Jeremy from the Christian band Willet. Jeremy stepped onstage with a guitar and an accompanying guitarist and just started jamming and singing his heart out. I’m usually pretty weary of openers that go onstage with just a guitar, but I had to admit, Jeremy was VERY solid and his songs were very catchy to sing along with. He did a great job of getting starting off the night right.

Up next were Canadian rockers Art Of Dying. I once saw these guys play the Rockstar Uproar Festival in 2011 opening for the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, Three Days Grace, and Seether, so it was great opportunity to see them again and hear what they have been up to! They stuck to the theme of keeping everything acoustic, so all 4 members sat on stools next to each other and proceeded to play stripped down versions of their songs. My instant reaction from the band was, “My Goodness these guys are GOOD!” All 4 members sang in the band and harmonized beautifully as they played together. They also pagenhomage to the late Chris Cornell by doing a short version of  “Hunger Strike” by Temple of the Dog. Art of Dying is a band to definitely check out if you have never heard of them as they absolutely killed it!

Now onto the main event: Scott Stapp! What made this night interesting was that Scott’s team was recording the show LIVE and made it available for sale on digital download. It was a very intimate experience that could be brought home which was a neat idea. Scott opened up his acoustic set strong with “Are You Ready”  and the crowd sang along to every word from the start. The rest of the night just seemed to pass by so quickly with Scott performing all of his hits with Creed. He mentioned this tour was to help celebrate Creed’s 20th anniversary. Naturally, Scott closed the night with his biggest hits including “Higher”, “One Last Breath”, and “My Sacrifice”. Even after all that Scott has been through, he still sounds just as great as he ever has, and you can tell he is in great physical shape! It will be exciting to see what these next 20 years have in store for Scott Stapp.
