SHOW REVIEW: Maggie Rogers brings a magical soul touching performance to Fox Theater

We have been anxiously awaiting the return of Maggie Rogers to the Bay Area. Last year, she blew us away with her outstanding performances at Outside Lands and the Fillmore. Well, Friday night she returned with a phenomenal show at the Fox Theater in Oakland.

The night kicked off with an impressive set by Melanie Faye. She captivated the crowd with funk and flash, rockin her guitar and having us applaud her  every note. I was grateful for the introduction to the new artist and I can’t wait to see Melanie once again. You can catch her return to the Bay Area on May 18th as she will be opening for Mac DeMarco at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

As expected, when the lights dimmed, the sold out crowd loudly sang to Abba’s Dancing Queen, inciting energy throughout the venue. The set kicked off in high gear with a flawless intoxicating performance of Give a Little. From the first song to the last, the crowd was fully enveloped in the intense energy that Maggie gave to the crowd. The crowd, which was a proud displace of diversity and inclusion, included a wide range of age, gender, race, culture, sex. They were all different in their own walks of life but they came together for the love of music and Maggie Rogers. Together, they were a force of one;  a force of love, honesty and true passion for music.  Maggie seems to bring out the best in all of us and I thank her for that.

On a personal note, we have had such struggles after losing our home, business and pet in the 2017 Santa Rosa firestorm. Music has truly been the one constant positive in our lives. Moving 9 times and suffering the loss of our life before the fire, has provided us with the every day challenge of moving forward and staying positive. But with music, those times of despair then become flooded with hope, optimism and joy. That is exactly what Maggie’s show brought to us. We were grinning ear to ear and singing along with the crowd, being “part of something bigger than ourselves”.
