Tuesday night we headed to the Independent in San Francisco to catch the co-headlining tour of The Dirty Nil and Daniel Romano’s Outfit, along with opener Wander. The Dirty Nil had released their album Free Rein to Passions and San Francisco was one of the last few stops of their US/Canada tour. We arrived early and caught the local opener Wander and they gave us a fierce instrumental rock set. Daniel Romano’s Outfit blew us away with their fun and engaging set.
The crowd was ready to rock as The Dirty Nil took the stage. The energy in the room ramped up even more as the trio kicked off their set with adrenaline blazing. They were incredible! They reminded me of another trio that was my favorite band in the 90’s Material Issue. If you know, you know. This Canadian rock band gave it there all and then some. What I really move about them, is that you can’t place them into one single genre or style of music. They bring it all, rock, punk, pop, and more. They will have you grinning from ear to ear, singing along or jumping into the mosh pit! We need more of the The Dirty Nil!!!

About the album
On Free Rein to Passions, the band followed their instincts down to the note to produce their most authentic work to date. The Nil‘s back-to-basics approach was a direct reaction to their previous record, 2021’s Fuck Art, a creative process that brought too many industry people whispering in the band’s ears, telling them how to polish and tweak their songs to fit on the radio or streaming playlists or whatever other arbitrary whims the modern music machine demands.
“There were all these expectations and pressures, people telling us to try this or that,” says Bentham. “We’re by no means the biggest band in the world, but in our ecosystem it became hard to try to make all these people happy. We were given challenges, and I think we met them, but getting to that place, it made me realize: ‘If we go any further in this direction, then I don’t know what we’re doing anymore.’ It had gotten to a point where the creation wasn’t very fun.”
