Ceramic Animal have released a new single, “Valerie”, along with an accompanying music video directed by Perry Shall and Bob Sweeney. The single is the last release before her new album “Sweet Unknown”, which will be released on March 4th.
‘Valerie’ is an ode to rock ‘n’ roll and its classic stereotypes. The instrumentation contrasts with the somber lyrics, which tell of the rise and fall of a mysterious muse, Valerie. The underlying themes show how someone seems to have everything, but everyone struggles in ways that aren’t always obvious,”
says Ceramic Animal singer Chris Regan. The music video consists of a series of vignettes that could have come straight out of the MTV hairband era.
The previous single “Tangled” was accompanied by a music video directed by Andy Hawkes.
“‘Tangled’ is about falling in love with someone, but life separates you. The distance makes it harder to trust the person that means so much to you…but that separation can create a stronger bond because you have to work harder to keep the relationship alive,”
said Ceramic Animal singer Chris Regan.
Ceramic Animal recently announced the release of their new album “Sweet Unknown” which will be out on March 4th. The album will be the first release on Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound label. To mark the occasion, they released the theme song and accompanying music video, directed by Ford Fairchild. The title track is a Roy Orbison-inspired meditation on the other side.
“Lyrically and sonically, ‘Sweet Unknown’ embodies a plunge into an uncertain but beautiful darkness,” says drummer Erik Regan. “We’re really excited that the world is getting to know this album with a song that addresses one of the album’s big themes.”
“Sweet Unknown” was produced by Dan Auerbach.
Ceramic Animal hail from historic Doylestown, Pennsylvania, about an hour north of Philadelphia. The band consists of a trio of brothers – Chris Regan (vocals, guitar), Erik Regan (drums), and Elliott Regan (vocals, keys) – as well as childhood friends Anthony Marchione (guitar) and Dallas Hosey (vocals, bass). A top-flight guitar band with a strong focus on songwriting, they fuse post-punk, psych, and ’70s pop into a sound that’s not far removed from contemporaries like The War On Drugs, Strand of Oaks, or Pennsylvania artist Kurt Vile.
Before they reached the ears of Easy Eye Sound owner, producer, and The Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach, the band had already had some success. Ceramic Animal self-financed, produced, and released three albums, attracting a large and far-flung fan base. They never consciously went for a robust DIY system; instead, they just groped their way in the dark and did what five guys from Doylestown, PA would do – work hard.
Vivid and imaginative, Ceramic Animal’s music showcases a very real and relatable emotional alienation that runs through the lyrics, where people leave holes in your life where flickering memories of better times offer the only solace. The three Regan brothers lost their father – their biggest influence and biggest fan – just before recording this album. This makes the album more thoughtful, but not devoid of hope and warmth.
