A few days ago, Whiskey Myers announced their new self-produced sixth studio album “Tornillo”. It will be released July 29th. Check out the first single “John Wayne”.

For genre-bending band Whiskey Myers, 2019’s self-titled and self-produced album marked a turning point. Rolling Stone gushed that the “irresistible” album was “the record the band wanted to make”, while the magazine credited it with an article entitled “How Whiskey Myers Won Over Mick Jagger and Made the Album of Their Career”. counted the best of the year; the album sold 41,000 copies in the US in its first week and topped the country and Americana album charts (as well as #2 on the rock charts).

Now, after spending 21 days in isolation at the 2,300-acre Sonic Ranch Studio deep in the heart of their Texas home, just a few miles from the US-Mexico border, the Gold-certified Renegades have focused on what they do can best. The six-piece band has continued their solid, more than ten years old foundation to explore new soundscapes.

“It’s going to have a slightly different sound,” lead singer Cody Cannon recently told Outsider. “It’s still Whiskey Myers at its core, but it’s a little bit fresher… We used a lot of bass and horns, which is something we’ve always wanted to do. We’re just fans of all that old music and Motown stuff, and a lot of what comes out of Muscle Shoals, old rock ‘n’ roll.”

“I think we’re going to bend the [genre] even more with the new record,” he continued. “It’s all there. But it’s fun, isn’t it? I hate the whole ‘put it in a box. It’s got to be you’ thing… It’s not art to me. I love the idea of just doing that, what you feel. It comes out a certain way because that’s the way it is. Whiskey Myers never really tried to be a certain way. We just are who we are. I think that’s the beauty in music: the freedom to create something.”

“Tornillo” as a whole does just that, taking as much inspiration from Nirvana as it does Waylon Jennings – even bringing the gospel influence of the legendary McCrary Sisters to the project as backing vocals. In addition to Cannon, who is in charge of the songwriting, the album also includes lead guitarist John Jeffers and his bandmates Jamey Gleaves and Tony Kent, as well as up-and-coming singer/songwriter Aaron Raitiere (Anderson East, Oak Ridge Boys, A Star is Born).
