12 Days of Bands You Have to Know

Day 4 of 12 Days of Bands You Have to Know goes to False Puppet

December 12, 2013

Today is Day 4 of our 12 Days of Bands You Have to Know. We have a great young band from Santa Barbara, False Puppet.  False Puppet is Tyler Benko on Guitar / Vocals, Channing Peake on Bass / Vocals and Brennan Benko on Drums. There may be only three of them but they create a big sound. Their music has an alternative edge to it but equally rocks and has some great punk influences. They definitely have many layers to their music and it completely draws you in. They caught me off guard because they are so young and yet amazingly talented. You can check out their recently released video for their single, “What You Do To Me” here:   I love that song, it takes you from alternative style right in to some heavier guitars.  You can pick up their EP Far Out which is available on Itunes here. Another one of my favorite songs is Tonight We Run Away. The intro is bad ass on it and the vocals just literally wrap around you like [Read More]

Dir En Grey captivates San Francisco crowd and an interview with Toshiya

December 12, 2013

Last month we had the pleasure of catching Dir En Grey as they returned to San Francisco at the Regency Ballroom. It was a full night of incredible metal to include amazing opener Dagoba.  This was at the tail end of their spectacular 14 date tour in North America. Dir En Grey once again put on a world class, cross cultural performance. This Japanese quintet has a strong and dedicated following and when we arrived, we got to see many of their dedicated fans waiting outside in line for hours to get in decked out with their theatrical Dir En Grey makeup. We had the opportunity to have our Ben Mitchell interview bassist, Toshiya prior to their performance and we are pleased to bring that interview to you here in it’s entirety:   The performance of Dir En Grey that night was truly captivating. Vocalist, Kyo can take you on a ride with his vocals as he goes from deep growls to theatrical vocals and truly has one of the most remarkable vocal ranges out [Read More]

Countdown of 14 Bands that will rule in 2014! #14 goes to Monster Truck!

December 11, 2013

Today we start a very new special countdown for the end of the year. Now is the time when we countdown the 14 bands that we think will rule in 2014.  We start at number 14 with Monster Truck! Hailing from Ontario, Canada these guys are true to form rockers. What started as a formation of musicians from various Canadian Indie bands, quickly gained momentum and the attention that they deserved.  This past year I was first introduced to Monster Truck and instantly fell in love with them.  They have successfully revived my love for vintage rock blended with groove filled bass, stellar riffs, thundering drums and powerful vocals. What more can you ask for? Monster Truck is Jon Harvey on Bass and Vocals, Brandon Bliss on Keys and Vocals, Steve Kiely on Drums and Vocals and Jeremy Widerman on Guitar and Vocals. Together these four guys deliver well crafted and seasoned rock n roll. Monster Truck took home the 2013 Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of The Year which is no surprise to me.  Earlier this year, they released a [Read More]

Day 3 of 12 Days of Bands You Have to Know is Whisky Blood

December 11, 2013

Today we are celebrating Day 3 of 12 Days of Bands You Have to Know. I have a kick ass rock band for you from London; Whisky Blood.  They describe themselves as playing, ‘STRAIGHT UP, NO BULLSHIT, ROCK N’ ROLL!” Believe me, when you take a listen, you will definitely agree with them.  I love them. Whisky Blood is Jamie Sloane on Vocals, Guitar, Paul Kixx on Guitar, and Vincent Velazco on Drums. They are currently in the process of finding a permanent bassist. These guys deliver an upgraded version of ’80s rock to life and are the complete package with their 80’s inspired looks, and spot on rock n’ roll. Jamie on vocals reminds me of a blend of Josh Todd from Buckcherry and Austin WInkler of Hinder. Their music brings me back to my firsts love; old school ’80s rock like Ratt, Skid Row, L.A. Guns, Firehouse, the list can go on and on.  But what is great is that Whisky Blood have added their own style and in no way, imitate. You will be [Read More]
