Harvard of the South is our Band of the Day

April 15, 2015

Today’s Band of the Day is a wonderful new band which formed from a side project of members of Blue October, Hurricane Bells and Longwave. We had the opportunity to catch them perform the other night opening for Blue October at Ace of Spades in Sacramento. It was amazing, to say the least. I was so glad that we got there early enough to see them blow away the crowd with their high energy set. It is great to see a band making great rock and roll with a passion for their music and it really shows when these guys perform live. They played the title track off their newly released EP, Miracle and it is a musical gem. This is one song that can truly become your lifeline of hope and captures your heart. Justin Furstenfeld delivers such honest emotion and vulnerability in the song yet, yet displays such a powerful strength. I strongly suggest you check them out when they come to play near your town. You can find their upcoming shows on their [Read More]

Blue October returns to Sacramento for an unforgettable night of music

April 14, 2015

Blue October returned to the Ace of Spades in Sacramento for an unforgettable night of music out on the Fear Tour. The night began with a very special treat of a set by Harvard of the South which features Steve Schiltz and is a side project of Blue October’s Matt Noveskey, Jeremy and Justin Furstenfeld. Their high energy set got the crowd fueled and ready to rock. Their song, Miracle is absolutely gripping and will have you immediately hooked. They recently released their new EP, Miracle and we look forward to what the future may bring for Harvard of the South, hopefully a lot more shows! Next up is one of our favorite vocalists, Ashleigh Stone. Ashleigh is truly amazing and her angelic vocals will captivate you as she delivers a shot of emotion that hits you right in the heart. Ashleigh is one of the first artists that Justin signed to his record label, UpDown Records and her new full length album, Elements is currently available at all the shows. Gypset presents Elsa y Elmar at the Hotel Café:, a musical angel who invites you to dance. By Patrick O’Heffernan

April 14, 2015

Elsa y Elmar – aka Elsa Carvajal – reminded us why she is so popular in her performance Friday night at the Gypset/KCRW concert at the Hotel Café.  In a nine song set she danced, sang, joked,  played the keyboard and guitar and in general had so much fun on stage that the audience practically smothered her in adoration. A young singer-songwriter from Columbia, Elsa calls herself a singer of “spiritual pop”.  I am not sure what that genre is, but if the Hotel Café performance and her debut album Sentirnos Bien  released in 2013 is any indication she is a standout in the  crowded field of female pop singer/songwriters in any language.  Her arrangements are addictive, blending hooks and verses with laughs and sparkle.  Her lyrics are just plain fun – and sometimes inside jokes. Her stage presence is a breath of fresh innocence that radiates “happy”, which is what everyone in the audience was. Elsa gave us nine songs, punctuated by conversations, funny faces, a plea  for marriage equality, and some pretty fancy [Read More]
