We were at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco earlier this week to watch one of our favorite bands, State Line Empire play as they were set to open up for Skid Row. In addition to the great warm up by The Devil In California, State Line Empire put on a fantastic set. Then up next was Black Star Riders, if you are not familiar with them as I wasn’t… Black Star Riders is comprised of members of Thin Lizzy…. YES! You heard me right, Thin Lizzy!
Black Star Riders began in 2012 as Thin Lizzy announced they would not be recording new material under the Thin Lizzy name. Hence a new band formed, a new name and Black Star Riders was born. In addition to the Thin Lizzy alumni Ricky Warwick (vocals), Scott Gorham (guitar), Damon Johnson (guitar), Marco Mendoza (bass) is Jimmy DeGrasso on drums (Alice Cooper, Megadeth, David Lee Roth, Suicidal Tendencies). The band was amazing and they played an energetic non stop set that have everyone in the audience packed to the front to witness what might be the best show of the year for them. Check out a slide show of photos from our Rockin Ryan here:
It was magical to watch and even more so to hear them play many Thin Lizzy classics as well as songs off their new album, All Hell Breaks Lose. I think I was literally left speechless when they performed Jailbreak, The Boys are Back in Town, and Cowboy Song. Have you ever been so “in the moment” when at a concert, where even though the music is so infectious you want to move around and just scream out the words… but you can’t. You are captured by the moment and you just want to take it all in and not forget even one second of their set. That is exactly how I felt, I stood there with the beat flowing through my body, entranced with the spectacular performance by the Black Star Riders. It was like that Ratatouille moment (kid’s movie reference where the food critic takes one bite of the ratatouille he is being served and immediately is taken back in time to his childhood to relive a special moment) That was me! When The Cowboy Song came on, I was taken back to my childhood watching my older brother get ready for a night on the town as he was blaring Thin Lizzy. I was a wide eyed girl of maybe 10 and couldn’t help but watch him and how he swaggered around his room singing and doing his best air guitar! Only to be oblivious to me watching him.
The songs brought such great memories to me and the music of Thin Lizzy is timeless and classic. Yet now we are treated to the addition of a whole new generation of songs that I can’t wait to create more memories too. They are currently on a US Tour and will then embark on a UK tour before heading back into the studio to record the follow up to All Hell Breaks Lose with producer Joe Elliott and engineer Ronan McHugh. Make sure to pick up their current release, All Hell Breaks Lose and let’s crank it up loud! Head over to iTunes here and make sure to pick it up.
