Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Band is Barenaked Ladies. Today I am featuring one of my very personal favorites on the Bottle Rock lineup for this year. Barenaked Ladies often referred as BNL, has been one of my favorite bands for well over 20 years. I think if I look hard enough I could still find my original Gordon CD or maybe even the cassette tape that a friend from Canada gave to me prior.  I remember the first time I saw them live was in a club in British Columbia and I was there for business and went to check out a local show with some friends. I had no idea who they were or what their music was like. I was your typical 20 year old something that enjoyed all types of music.  Well, they came out and performed and sang fun loving songs with so much charisma and energy that I was instantly hooked. When I went back home to the SF Bay Area I told all my friends about them, and they were hesitant to even take a listen! I was so disappointed, many took one listen and felt they were not their usual mod or 90’s dance music so they wouldn’t even give them a full chance.  Of course, I would continue my love for them and my friend from Canada would send me more CDs.
Over the years, their audience widened and with their success from Born on a Pirate Ship they were becoming quite well known. They even performed at the Peach Pit (the local hangout) on an episode of Beverly Hills 90210 and had their song Shoe Box featured on the sitcome Friends soundtrack. Oddly, the same friends who once scoffed at my love for BNL were now asking me if I had ever heard of this “new band”. I didn’t give them my “I told you so” speech, instead I pulled out my CDs and cassettes and let them listen to all the early BNL. Their eyes widened and their ears were in music heaven. That is exactly what you get when you listen to BNL. Their music represents such a wonderful time in my life; the good times, the fun times, the bad times. Their music was the playlist of my life so many times. Their catalog of music ranges from fun songs like If I Had A Million Dollars to very heartfelt emotional stirring songs like The Flag. Their latest album Grinning Streak is definitely one to add to your playlist.  I love it all and I can’t wait for you to see them at this year’s Bottle Rock Napa.
