Concert Review by Alex Bock of The Winery Dogs / Inglorious in Munich

Munich, Feb. 15th, 2016, Backstage

So Munich was in for a special treat last Monday. The Winery Dogs made a stop in Munich on their, so far pretty successful, world tour.

The venue was packed and sold out, even a barrier was installed, which isn’t the ordinary for that venue. Not that it would’ve been needed to hold back the audience, because they behaved quite well. But it was a plus for the photographers (which includes myself).

Opener on this tour was Inglorious. They are a hard rock band from the UK. Influences include the classic rock bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow and Aerosmith. Definitely a band you should look into when you’re a fan of the ‘classic’ hard rock genre. Even though the audience didn’t really move that much (that’s honestly no bands fault, that’s a town specific thing), it was fun to watch them play. You could occasionally see people moving their heads slightly, tapping their feet and sometimes cheering.  However, the band played a solid set. So for all the pure rock fans out there, check them out. You’ll sure like them. Inglorious are about to release their debut self-titled record on February 19th. They’ll be touring the UK until the end of February. So go check them out.

Get some impression on what they sound like here:

The main act of the night, the three people everyone was waiting for, entered the stage at about 9pm. Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan a.k.a. The Winery Dogs played for almost two hours and left the crowd more than satisfied and stunned on their musical performance. Everyone in the band is an exceptional musician and plays his instrument with perfection. The set list that night included Oblivion, We Are One, Time Machine, Empire, The Other Side, Ghost Town, I’m No Angel, Fire and their recent release ‘Hot Streak’, the title track of their second record.

Those instrumental solos can be really bothering sometimes, but with The Winery Dogs surely something everyone was waiting for. I would’ve loved a longer solo by Mike Portnoy, but then it was a special one where he not only used his drums, but everything on stage that made a sound, like the floor, a mic stand and so on. Billy Sheehan did a longer bass solo in which he showed his amazing skills. I have honestly never seen such an incredibly awesome solo on a bass. Just wow! Didn’t know you could get that out of a four string instrument. Richie Kotzen impressively showed that he’s an incredible guitar player, but he also played the piano for a while on stage. The acoustic performance of ‘Fire’ with only Richie on acoustic guitar was amazing. He’s also the only guitar player I know that doesn’t use a pick.

Here’s some pictures of the night to recap for the ones who were there and to get hungry for everyone else. The tour so far is mostly sold out. So I’d advise you to run to your local ticket office and grab one, while they last.
