Munich, Kranhalle (Feierwerk), March 29th, 2016
Funeral For A Friend are currently on a farewell tour through different countries. They say goodbye to their audience after 15 years. With them on this tour are ZOAX, a relatively new band from the UK and Shai Hulud, a US based band that is in the business for about 20 years now. There’s always two shows in a row with playthroughs of the band’s first two records ‘Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation’ and `Hours’.
Opening band was ZOAX. They’re from the UK and formed in 2013. It was their third time playing in Germany, so far always as an opening band. We were lucky to catch Adam Carroll (vocals) and Doug Wotherspoon (guitar) for an interview that you can check out here:
It was my second time to see them play, first was with Nothing More in November 2015. Both times were great. Adam has an awesome way to interact with the audience, inviting them several times to come closer to the stage and get going with the music. They played songs from their first two EP’s, but also new songs. They opened with their latest release, ‘The Bad Blood’, from their soon to be released first full length record. It’s self-titled and will be out May 13th, 2016.

Second band that night were Shai Hulud. They’re around for quite a while now. They were the heaviest band on the bill. They brought along a fill-in-singer for that tour, Matty Carlock. Carlock was the vocalist in a Hardcore band called ,Back And Forth’. Now he’s making music on his own and completely switched the genre to indie folk/country/acoustic. His debut record ‘Loveless’ was released on March 4th. But back to Shai Hulud. They delivered a very energetic set, always keeping close contact to the audience. Get an impression of their show in the pictures of that night:
When Funeral For A Friend entered the stage the room was packed. They played a 1h 40 minutes set, which is one of the longest I’ve been to lately. It was a very emotional night. The singer, Matthew Davies, more than once close to tears, took his time to talk about the band, the music, the fans and their influences. How proud he was to have Shai Hulud on this tour, a band that influenced all the members of FFAF way before they even got together as a band. 15 years is quite some time to survive in the music business. More than once he thanked everyone for sticking to the band through that time and for being there that night. About a third of the crowd has also been there the night before. The closer the show got to an end, the more everyone realized, that this is the final time to see hear the band play. The final song that closed the chapter in Bavaria’s capitol was ‘Roses Of The Dead’. Throughout the whole show the audience sang along with the band, sometimes it was just the crowd, singing the words loud and proud. You could really feel the dedication and affection everyone in that room had for this band. It was night to remember with lots of ‘goose bump’ moments.
Here are some pictures to get an impression of the show. It wasn’t easy to get decent shots because it was really crowded. I hope those few pictures give you an idea though.
