Today, Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist Tom Meikle—best known under his moniker Mappe Of—announces his forthcoming full-length record, Afterglades, arriving September 19 via Paper Bag Records. A sweeping experimental sci-fi-folk album, Afterglades is a meditation on the end of the world—and what it means to face it alongside the people you love.
Alongside the announcement, Meikle shares the album’s third single, “A Scourge Laid Upon The Earth,” following previously released tracks “Happiness in the Singularity” and “Honeyhaze.” As the closing chapter in Afterglades’ narrative arc—a sci-fi exploration of a future where human society has collapsed—the track channels the cinematic weight of a final act in a survival epic. Told through the lens of a couple living out their last days in isolation at the edge of the earth, “Scourge” surges with a sense of raw intensity, a touch of mysticism, and a fierce, hard-won sense of hope.
Meikle shares,
“This was the last song I wrote for the record. It felt like there needed to be a sense of weight to this chapter of the story, there needed to be some chaos as a payoff for all of this reflection.This is in many ways the extinction level event. It needed to be heavy and raucous, retribution for all of our mistakes. It’s a bit of my dormant heavy metal energy emerging from me. It was an opportunity for me to revel in my frustration at our impact on the natural world. That’s a through line in a lot of what I do.”
The single is paired with a stunning and intense live performance recorded in an open-concept studio located in a century old converted church in Hamilton, Ontario. Directed by Cam Veitch and Black Lake, the video was filmed at Catherine North Studios and features Meikle joined by a full band, including electric guitars, synths, and violins.
Equal parts cinematic and cathartic, “A Scourge Laid Upon The Earth” encapsulates the spirit of Afterglades—a genre-bending, emotionally immersive project rooted in post-apocalyptic imagination and deeply human truth.
