Converge have returned with a new single, “We Were Never the Same,” giving fans a powerful taste of their upcoming album Love Is Not Enough, due out February 13 via Epitaph / Deathwish. The track hits with the kind of emotional weight and sonic force that Converge have built their legacy on;  raw, fearless, and deeply human.

For decades, Converge have made music that doesn’t just hit hard, it hits deep. “We Were Never the Same” continues that tradition, pushing both intensity and vulnerability into a space that feels almost overwhelming in the best possible way. It’s the sound of a band that refuses to go numb, channeling everything from heartbreak to fury into something that feels painfully honest.  Jacob Bannon comments,

I wrote these words in the parking lot of a funeral home while reflecting on loss. Why do we gather to mourn but not to cherish? It’s an honest question that exposes our collective distractions and shortcomings. Grief brings clarity— We all must do better.”

On Love Is Not Enough, vocalist and lyricist Jacob Bannon, guitarist and producer Kurt Ballou, bassist and vocalist Nate Newton, and drummer Ben Koller sharpen their collective vision to a fine point. Every song feels essential. There’s no excess,  just tightly focused energy, emotion, and purpose driving the album forward.

The record moves like a storm, shifting between moments of crushing heaviness and haunting clarity. From the opening blast of the title track to the closing force of “We Were Never the Same,” the album captures the anxiety, anger, and uncertainty of modern life, turning it into something both brutal and strangely beautiful. It’s the kind of release that leaves you drained, but somehow clearer on the other side.
