The venue, the Intimate Chapel in San Francisco, set the tone for something special. On a sold-out Saturday night, it truly was the place to be. The line wrapped around the block, and you could feel the anticipation building with every step closer to the door as fans made their way in for an evening with Maya Hawke. Inside, the venue’s stunning architecture as it was originally built as a church in early 1900s, and that sparkly disco ball hanging overhead gave it an almost dreamlike glow, an iconic setting that felt perfectly suited for what was about to unfold.
With just three chairs on stage, you knew right away this wasn’t going to be a typical show, it was going to be something intimate, something magical. Maya was joined by her husband, Christian Lee Hutson, along with an amazing violinist (my apologies for not having her name) who added a beautiful layer to the performance. Throughout the night, Maya not only performed but opened up, sharing stories behind the songs, engaging with the crowd, and creating a space that felt personal and real. One of my favorite moments of the night was when she shared a story about taking a trip to Graceland with her father, Ethan Hawke. What made it even more special was that she wasn’t drawn there for Elvis Presley, but because of Paul Simon and a line from one of his songs that had resonated deeply with her. It was such a simple, beautiful glimpse into her life, and one that made the entire night feel even more intimate.
Hearing her upcoming album MAITREYA CORSO come to life in that setting was something special, with the audience completely locked in, hanging on every note and every word. Maya Hawke sings like a lost ’70s folk poet; somewhere between Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell with a conversational, story-driven style that feels intimate, raw, and quietly nostalgic. It was the kind of performance that didn’t just fill the room, it settled into it, wrapping around everyone there and making the night feel unforgettable.
