Dree Paterson breaks through with A Louder Side of Me EP By Patrick O’Heffernan

July 11, 2014

By Patrick O’Heffernan, Host Music FridayLive! Breaking through the clutter in the LA music market is very difficult for a young artist.  You build a following through small clubs, singing covers while you write your own songs and collect the confidence, the capital and the inventory to produce a first EP or album.  And when you do, it had better be more than  good – because everyone here  is good – it must be outstanding and uniquely yours. Dree Paterson has done that.  Her debut EP,  A Louder Side of Me is a breakthrough work that demonstrates her poised flexibility across multiple genres while solidly establishing a unique, unmistakable voice that resonates in all of them. Each of the five songs on A Louder Side of Me is carefully crafted so that it stands alone while remaining connected to the others through her voice and inflection .  The result is a whole greater than the sum of the parts, a far-ranging musical narrative that could very be the  best debut EP of the year. When I heard [Read More]

Rock Legend Randy Bachman set to release LIVE CD/DVD set highlighting his iconic career

July 10, 2014

Rock legend Randy Bachman has had quite a successful career and has written probably a lot of your favorite songs. I know many of his classics are still some of my most played tracks on my playlist. Often referred to as the “architect of Canadian rock n’ roll, Bachman’s catalogue of hits include “American Woman,” “These Eyes,” “No Time,” “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” and “Roll On Down the Highway.” And now, Bachman himself offers thrilling in-concert renditions and earnest tales behind the creation of all of these classics (and many more), on ‘Every Song Tells A Story,’ a fourteen-track CD/DVD set that will be released on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 via the Independent Label Services Group (ILS). Check out a video teaser of the DVD here: A pre-order option is available via Amazon: http://amzn.com/B00IDDHUZ4. Recorded in April 2013, at Pantages Playhouse Theatre in Winnipeg, ‘Every Song Tells A Story’ features Bachman in a rare and intimate setting, weaving together the transcendent and iconic hits of the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive with the [Read More]

Matt Jaffe  and the Distractions expand their LA audience at The Federal Bar in NoHo.

July 10, 2014

By Patrick O’Heffernan, Host, Music FridayLive!  Matt Jaffe brought his high energy rock band The Distractions to North Hollywood’s Federal last night, energizing a respectable audience and demonstrating that he can play in larger venues in Los Angeles, the nation’s music capital.  This was a return trip for the young new wave band, having previously opened for bands at The Central in Santa Monica and the venerable, if smaller, The Mint. The young (he just finished his first year at Yale) northern California-raised guitarist and his band mates drummer Alex Coltharp and bassist Sammie Fischer have mastered the high-spirited sound that he shifted to when he exchanged the acoustic music of his high school days for an electric guitar.  With songwriting that shimmers with the best of the hard rock groups in the Southland clubs these days, Matt led his bandmates in nine new songs that showed how he has moved far beyond the slick blend-into-the-background pop music that surrounds us. And his lyrics always give us something to think about. I suspect the audience would [Read More]

The Outfield Guitarist and songwriter, John Spinks dies from liver cancer

July 9, 2014

John Spinks Rest In Peace Songwriter and guitarist for The Outfield, John Spinks has passed away at age 60 from liver cancer. The British pop rock band, The Outfeild had eight Billboard 100  hits from 1986 – 1992 which includes of course it’s Number 6 big hit, Your Love which was written by John. Their debut album, Play Deep spent 66 weeks on the chart and went Platinum. Oddly, The Outfield had great commercial success in the US much more than their homeland. I think I still have my Outfield cassettes. I wore them out and loved them. Their songs still bring me back to my youth as soon as I play them. I thank them for the great music which became the soundtrack of my youth. We send our deepest condolences to John’s family and friends. The Outfield posted the following message on their Facebook page: It is with great sadness to inform you that John passed away at 09.55 on Wednesday 9th July 2014. He was 60 years old. As many of [Read More]

Mary Scholz’s The Girl You Thought You Knew: a romance propelled by angelic voice and heart piercing lyrics.

July 2, 2014

To see Mary Scholz live in concert is to fall in love.  It is not just the flashing dark eyes or the crown of black ringlets or the confident, welcoming body language at the microphone.  It is the voice and the lyrics – the music that flows from the stage and puts its soft hands on your cheeks, kisses your forehead, your ears, your mouth and becomes your lover.  You are taken;  you know this woman and her music and you want to spend the rest of your life listening to her. Her new album, The Girl You Thought You Knew has the same effect. It’s a star-filled Milky Way of music that tightens your stomach, speeds your pulse and captures your heart.  The fifteen songs on this album are each crafted and polished and presented as a love offering in a carefully sequenced order that defines her heart and pierces yours.  This is not an album to play on shuffle;  it s a romance  ready to ripen. Check out our interview with Mattie of For Today and catch them on Warped Tour!

July 1, 2014

This year’s Vans Warped Tour has a lot of great bands and an amazing array of music which will satisfy everyone’s needs. I was excited when I heard that For Today would be playing on the Kia Soul Stage. They will be on the entire tour and they put on an amazing set. They come out and give 150% energy on the stage and the crowd is instantly adrenalized. Whatever time they are set to play, the crowd gets invigorated by their metal/hardcore set and the energy is contagious. I was ecstatic to catch them twice in the week and each time they delivered a fierce spot on set. We had the chance to chat with the inspring vocalist, Mattie Montgomerey before his set at the Wheatland California date. Mattie is truly one of the nicest guys and always has very inspirational advice. Whether you feel defeated, down, or facing a bump in the road, Mattie is always there to pick you p and let you know you can make it through anything. That is [Read More]
