Concert Review by Alex Bock of The Winery Dogs / Inglorious in Munich

February 18, 2016

Munich, Feb. 15th, 2016, Backstage So Munich was in for a special treat last Monday. The Winery Dogs made a stop in Munich on their, so far pretty successful, world tour. The venue was packed and sold out, even a barrier was installed, which isn’t the ordinary for that venue. Not that it would’ve been needed to hold back the audience, because they behaved quite well. But it was a plus for the photographers (which includes myself). Opener on this tour was Inglorious. They are a hard rock band from the UK. Influences include the classic rock bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow and Aerosmith. Definitely a band you should look into when you’re a fan of the ‘classic’ hard rock genre. Even though the audience didn’t really move that much (that’s honestly no bands fault, that’s a town specific thing), it was fun to watch them play. You could occasionally see people moving their heads slightly, tapping their feet and sometimes cheering.  However, the band played a solid set. So for all [Read More]

Evan Taylor Jones’ The Sunray Sessions: rock, blues and one of today’s  best voices. By Patrick O’Heffernan

February 18, 2016

(Los Angeles) Once in a while I indulge myself in the music I grew up with, what many people call “good old fashioned rock and roll”, which includes early standards from Bill Halley to blues rock classics from Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Rolling Stones.  Evan Taylor Jones should be on that list.  He has taken that “good old fashioned rock and roll” and updated it to the 21st Century with high energy, funky blues and a voice that evokes everyone from Sinatra to Ray Charles. His new EP, The Sunray Sessions, recorded at the Sunray Recording Studios in Casselberry, Florida, pushes all my musical happy buttons and I suspect will push the happy buttons of many, many people around the world.   The six songs on the EP, including a stirring cover of the Queens of the Stone Age song “Smooth “Sailing”, move with a dynamic energy and pure vocal ability that is irresistible – you must hit replay.  The Sunray Sessions songs reach into your DNA, rearrange your genes [Read More]

A conversation with Doña Oxford, Queen of Boogie-woogie and Goddess of Soul. By Patrick O’Heffernan

February 17, 2016

Dona Oxford was excited.  Oxford is known for being excited about her music, but this time she was excited because she had just introduced me to Ray Kurzweil at the NAMM 2016 Kurzweil electric keyboard booth where, the day before, Stevie Wonder had shown up, sat down at the keyboard Oxford  had just vacated and started to play for the assembled crowd.  But she was even more excited about the fact that later in evening she would be playing for Wonder at the Kurzweil Private party. “He touched my sweat on the keys! Stevie Wonder touched my sweat on the keys,’ she exclaimed, “and now I will be playing for him”. But that is a common story for Oxford, known to her legions of fans as the Queen of Boogie-woogie and the Princess of Soul. Many, many greats have asked her to play for them on stage, in the recording studio and on tour.  Her keyboard chops (she also plays drums), her energy, her voice and her songwriting have been recognized over and over [Read More]

The Ivins shine in the spotlight with their new video for Stockholm Syndrome

February 17, 2016

Get ready to catch alternative rockers The Ivins in the spotlight with their new video. The Ivins features brothers Jack and Jim Ivins from Richmond, VA. They have just released a music video for their infectious new track Stockholm Syndrome. It is great to see a band put so much energy and attention in to their music and the passion these guys carry shines through with their sound. We applaud them for bringing us something new in this usually over-saturated market.  Jim told us a bit more about the new track, “As for the inspiration behind it, Jack and I both know how ADD the 2016 music listener is and know that immediacy is the name of the game so we wanted a song that just blasts off right from the top to get your attention. In a larger musical sense, however, the inspiration came from our quest as real musicians/songwriters playing in a genre that is completely in the outs with mainstream culture: How do you recontextualize something unpopular and present it to someone in a way that makes them compelled [Read More]

Can’t get enough of The Virginmarys and their new song, Motherless Land

February 16, 2016

We are only weeks away from the return of The Virginmarys as they are set to tour with Shinedown in March 2016!  I have been hooked on them from the first time I heard them several years ago. They have such a vibrant punk edge rock sound that will have you begging for more. They are set to release their new album, Divides on May 6th. You can check out their new song, Motherless Land. The describe the song as “It’s a song about escape and it’s full of questions of what we’re collectively doing in 2016. It’s about striving for peace, love and truth.”   The Virginmarys are an incredible live band and sound just as awesome as their recordings. Ally Dickaty on vocals/guitar is fierce as he bounces around and fills the room with emotionally driven lyrics. Matt Rose on bass is a wild man, and you can feel the adrenaline that is powering him. Danny Dolan on drums is always throwing out some cheeky drum fills as he maintains a 150% energy overload.
