Concert Review Free & Easy Festival – July 31st, 2016, Part 2: Lionheart

August 16, 2016

So I left The Dead Daisies a bit earlier to catch some of Lionheart’s show next door. I checked the Halle a few times that night to get a glimpse at the opening bands and the later the night, the hotter it got there. The temperature outside was by far colder than inside, so at first I had to clean the fog from my lens a few times, because it felt like a sauna in there. Five seconds in and you were drenched. Lionheart played a really powerful set, tearing down the place. The crowd was in a constant mosh-pit and towards the end of the show, there was almost constant crowd surfing. They poured their heart and soul into it, Rob Watson, their singer, thanking the crowd more than once for twelve awesome years. He even jumped into the crowd himself, surfing along. You could really see that they played to have fun and everyone could feel that. The band announced that they will call it quits after over a decade of recording and touring. [Read More]

Concert Review Free & Easy Festival – July 31st, 2016, Part 1: The Dead Daisies

August 16, 2016

Every summer one of my favorite venues in Munich, the Backstage, is hosting the Free & Easy festival. That’s 18 days of free shows on different stages inside and open-air. Last year they had bands like Combichrist, Hardcore Superstar and Armored Saint. This year also drew some awesome bands. I was able to get there on three nights, first one July 31st, where The Dead Daisies played a smaller stage, the Club and Lionheart had their last ever Munich show at the Halle. Stage times of both bands collided, so I chose to start off with The Dead Daisies and in between switch to Lionheart. I got to the venue way before the different clubs opened for the audience. Since the whole area is open for public, it’s much more crowded than on usual concert nights. So when I got there, people were already queuing for The Dead Daisies. Usually there’s opening bands, but The New Roses, that were at first set to play before TDD, switched to the midnight gig, so fans in there [Read More]

Concert Review Free & Easy Festival – August 2nd, 2016 (Werk) by Alex Bock

August 15, 2016

Deez Nuts That day Australian hardcore band Deez Nuts were the headliner. Three opening bands got the crowd going. First off there were Watch Out Stampede from Bremen, Germany, followed by Pathways who played a home gig. The third band on the bill were Hawthorne Heights whose Rock sound didn’t exactly fit the bill, but that didn’t stop the crowd from forming a mosh pit during their set. Hawthorne Heights are currently on a UK/European tour until August 19th. When Deez Nuts hit the stage, they were welcomed by a cheering crowd. They were starting out their set with ‘Shot After Shot’ and played a good mix of old and new stuff. All in all a set of 13 songs. The show was over pretty quick though and didn’t even last an hour, not much longer than their successors Hawthorne Heights played. Nevertheless, the people loved it. Here’s some impressions of the night: Watch Out Stampede: Pathways: Hawthorne Heights: Deez Nuts: Make sure to follow the band on their social media https://www.facebook.com/deeznutshardcore/home https://twitter.com/deeznuts https://www.instagram.com/deeznutsdtd/ ~ [Read More]

M.A.K.U. Sound System:  the United State of Dance

August 15, 2016

By Patrick O’Heffernan (Los Angeles) Raising her drumstick high above her straw hat-topped head haloed in electric blue light, drummer/vocalist Liliana Conde proclaimed “We can be together, we can come together right here with music”, and loosed the joyful demon players of the moving, grooving magical music machine, M.A.K.U. Sound System, who exploded onstage with the most infectious people-in-motion dance music this side of Colombia at LA’s Skirball Cultural Center.   Known as an “immigrant band” because most of its members are from Colombia, M.A.K.U. Sound System is currently on a national tour which brought it to the  Skirball Center  straddling the hills separating west LA from the San Fernando Valley, packing it with a diverse audience from all over this vast city and baking them into a single pulsing, dancing organism.  Out of their seats and onto the brick plaza under flashing LED lights on a cool summer night there were break dancers, cumbia dancers, salsa dancers, rock dancers and just plain old jumping up and down dancers  bumping into each other, applauding each other, hugging each other.  [Read More]
