The Music

As connoisseurs enjoy their tasting adventures of the palate, music fans will delight in the incomparable good-time lineup of national touring acts Galactic, Pimps of Joytime and Big Sam’s Funky Nation as well as local stars The Dixie Giants and Royal Jelly Jive.

Galactic

Born out of the intense heat, oppressive humidity, and unique rhythmic sense that marks New Orleans, Galactic burst onto the city’s scene in 1994. Through near-constant touring, the six-member band has continued to build a name for itself among critics and fans alike, crossing over into jazz, funk, and jam-band environments. Early on, the band described its sound as “swamp funk,” a term originally coined to define the sound of such bayou-bred, funk-fed artists as Doctor John, Chocolate Milk, and Galactic’s avowed idols, the Meters. More crucial to swamp funk than atmosphere, though, is the singularly syncopated New Orleans rhythm, known traditionally as playing the “second-line.” Rather than placing the beat on the one, second-line hits it on the four/one, or the “and-a-one” beat. “It’s New Orleans syncopation and that sensibility of space, which basically we sort of copped from the Meters,” guitarist Jeff Raines told Orlando Weekly.

The Pimps of Joytime

When it comes to throwing a party, the Pimps of Joytime raise the bar with swagger to spare. Rhythms and textures drawn from New Orleans funk, 90s club house, 60s salsa and hiphop all collide and fracture upon one another on their new LP, Jukestone Paradise. Dubbed “raucous and captivating” by Okayplayer, their album cuts play like the soundtrack for a ride through Brooklyn’s diverse neighborhoods, where the group’s sound materialized. And the Pimps’ live experience only takes it higher. Over the past decade, the group’s grassroots following mobilized from the underground club scene in New York to sell out historic venues like the Fillmore in San Francisco and showcase at festivals across the US and Europe. With more than 1 million Spotify plays to date, it seems word truly does spread to the wise. And when you pair high-caliber musicianship with rhythm and groove as universally enticing as it is unconventional, there’s no denying the dancefloor.

Big Sam’s Funky Nation

Noladelic PowerFunk. That’s the sound Big Sam’s Funky Nation have been whipping up for more than a decade. It’s high-energy music that mixes funk, rock & roll, hip-hop, and jazz into the same pot, glueing everything together with the brassy influence — and heavy grooves — of New Orleans. From national performances at Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits to hometown appearances Voodoo Fest and Jazz Fest, Big Sam’s Funky Nation have built their reputation onstage. The band’s live performance are legendary, filled with blasts of brass, bursts of electric guitar, and the charisma of Big Sam, (formerly of Dirty Dozen Brass Band), a frontman who sings, plays, dances, and involves the audience in everything he does. You don’t just watch a Funky Nation show. You become part of the show, singing along with Big Sam whenever he demands a call-and-response.

The Dixie Giants

“California Trad Jazz & more. No trumpet required.” For the past 3 years the Sonoma County-based group, The Dixie Giants, have brought their own special version of New Orleans music to the Bay Area. Whether they’re playing in clubs or on the streets, The Dixie Giants are infamous for radiating an infectious energy and always having a blast. They have shared the stage with such acts as Bonnie Raitt, Rebirth Brass Band, The Wood Brothers, Charlie Musselwhite, and the San Francisco Giants. Winners of the North Bay Bohemian’s “North Bay’s Best Jazz Band” award in 2014, The Dixie Giants recently released their sophomore album, “A-Salted”, featuring 6 original tunes and modern interpretations of 4 trad jazz classics.

Royal Jelly Jive

Since forming in San Francisco’s own Boom Boom Room in the summer of 2013, Royal Jelly Jive has quickly ascended to become one of the Bay Area’s most anticipated acts. After releasing their debut album to a packed house at Slims in late 2014, they hit the road and have been touring non-stop ever since. Playing high energy shows and festivals in cities and towns all across the West Coast, they have captivated the ears and hearts of almost all who hear them, intoxicating the masses with their unique and infectious music. They have been lucky enough to share stages with notable acts such as Michael Franti, Rebirth Brass Band and The California Honeydrops as well as performing at this past year’s Outside Lands Music Festival, Soul’d Out Music Festival, and are on the bill for this year’s Bottlerock Music Festival, Joshua Tree Music Festival and Portland’s Waterfront Blues Festival. Currently touring the release of their new album “Stand Up”, Royal Jelly Jive is off to making 2016 their biggest and best year yet!
