Today, Australian indie-rock band Gang Of Youths announced the release of their third studio record “angel in realtime”. It will be out February 25, 2022.
They also shared a brand-new track “tend the garden”.
The band comments:
“The record is about the life and legacy of Daves father, indegineous identity, death, grief and god. And also about the area around Angel, Islington.”
Despite, or perhaps because of, the absence of frontman Dave Le’aupepes father, his influence extends through the whole album – sometimes subliminal, sometimes clearly, when it’s about the specific personal experiences of loss: The oppositeness of intensity and inner contemplation, which happens, when a man experiences his last days; the overwhelming feeling for the surviving relatives, that, after the death of a loved one their lives will never be the same, while the rest of the world takes its course as if nothing happened.
After their latest single, “the angel of 8th ave.” – which is about falling in love and finding a new life in a new town together – and “the man himself” – which was based on a sampling recording from the isle of Mangaia on the cook islands and tells about a new stage of life without the leading hand of the father – Gang Of Youths released their new song “tend the garden” today.
The album draws a part of its fascination from the electric wide range of its influences – from American minimalism and contemporary classic to the legacy of the British Alternative/Indie-scene, from Drum ‘n’ Bass to the best Brit-Pop moments. It’s also heavily rooted be Le’aupepes Samoan legacy. Most tracks include samples from David Fanshawes Field Recordings indigenous music from the Polynesian islands and the south pacific. Moreover, talented Pacifica and Maori singers and instrumentalists contributed on “angel in realtime”.
Le’aupepe says:
“I hope, the record sets a monument to the man my father was and will remain, long after I myself won’t be around anymore. He has earned it.”
