Not Broken

They were out on tour with Buckcherry and put on an incredible set at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento. They truly had the crowd under their spell as everyone seemed to be talking about them after their set. We were able to chat with Josh and Nicholas after their set and are pleased to bring you that video here:

Before we left for Aftershock we had the chance to chat with lead singer, Austin as he was touring and are pleased to bring you that interview here:

Music Junkie Press: Thank you Austin for taking the time out to talk with us here at Music Junkie Press! Your new album, Not Broken is set to release on September 3rd and I was listening to it yesterday and was blown away.

This album is incredible from start to finish. I have to ask… Did you place these songs in this chronological order because it is as if you are telling a story that unfolds through the music?

Austin: Thank you so much. We actually kind of took some time, I think we kind of played around with the track list, even before we went in and decided what songs we were actually going to record. You know we had an idea of what songs that we knew that we wanted to record but then there was a couple more that we were like maybe we want to play around with this or that, and fool around with the track listing.

Music Junkie Press: It is, it comes out beautifully. Unbelievable work! I know that our songs become like our children but for you personally can you tell me which song off this album is the most special to you and why?

Austin: Oh…. Probably, all of them really but, I would totally have to say Run, Run is the little brain child that I love.

Music Junkie Press: That is a great song. I can’t believe for a debut album, how solid and outstanding it is. With this great album, does that put a burden on you guys for a follow up or is it too soon to even think about?

Austin: I think it is too soon to think about. I mean we are always trying to like, better ourselves and you know; progress and be that type of band.

Music Junkie Press: Now with the name Girl on Fire, that is a very unique name, how did that name come about or are you all just really big Alicia Keyes fans?… just kidding there

Austin: Oh! Ya, right. We kind of decided in 2007, when we first started playing together. So, I mean it was just that there was no Hunger Games, there was no, of course there was Alicia Keyes but that album wasn’t a thought. Ya, I mean, it was kind of something we just threw around and had a couple beers and were thinking about a band name, you know what I mean.

Music Junkie Press: You guys have been around since, that is crazy, awesome! We are very excited to see you coming out Sacramento here for our Aftershock Festival. This one is going to be crazy and has an incredible lineup. Which bands are you most looking forward to playing with?

Austin: Umm…, all of them! I am stoked to see Megadeth. Ya,  I mean, we are out right  now with Buckcherry so watching them every night is always awesome. We are going to watch their set and I mean there are amazing bands that are playing on the day we are playing, even the day after.

Music Junkie Press: It is! It will be amazing weekend. Gonna take a couple weeks after to recover from that one.You have been out on tour with another one of my fave bands, Buckcherry how was the tour been? What has been the craziest story that you can share about the tour so far?

Austin: Oh jeez, it has been amazing, the guys have just turned into family,  their crew, the band themselves, they have just turned out to be awesome, awesome dudes and they have taken us under their wing and kind of definitely showed us the ropes on a different level, know what I mean. Not too many crazy stories, to be honest. You know, it has been really chill and very like, I don’t know just been very fun. The craziest that I got I don’t know… Maybe… Canada…. Canada can be crazy if you really want it to be! It has been a really fun and solid trip all and all. We have been up there with them for I don’t know, jeez, almost three months. It has been incredible.

Music Junkie Press: Being out on the road this summer for a while, what is the first thing you look forward to doing when you return back to Seattle?

Austin: Sleep in my bed! That is always nice. I like my bed.

Music Junkie Press: If Girl on Fire could take any song from any other genre and turn it into your own style, what might it be?

Austin: Oooooh, There are so many. Umm. It sounds kind of weird but I would totally take Bruno Mars, Marry You and try that out. You know what I am saying. Ya, it would be a lot of fun. I mean it is a love song and all that stuff but it is just like one of those songs that I always get stuck in my head. I am kind of wondering if we take that or a Bruno Mars song, or some crazy pop song and make it sound really cool and turn it into a Girl on Fire song.

Music Junkie Press: If I could take a peak into your Ipod, what artist or song might I be most surprised at finding in there?

Austin: Oh, probably, well I mean, we don’t sound like I listen to the Doors, but I do. I have got The Doors at the Hollywood Bowl in 1968, I got that recording on my phone, my Ipod and I listen to that constantly to be honest with you. It is just amazing. But I am an old school at heart with all that stuff.

Music Junkie Press: So you are a big Doors fan?

Austin: I like the Doors, I love Jim Morrison, I love all the poetry, it is crazy to me.

Music Junkie Press: When we see you at Aftershock in Sacramento, I will give you a great book that Jim Cherry wrote called “‘Doors: Examined” which is a great detailed account of The Doors history that every fan must have!

Austin: That would be amazing!

Music Junkie Press: We look forward to your show at Aftershock and will be sharing all of your social media sites but lastly, is there anything else you would like to share with our audience?

Austin: Not Broken, September 3rd it is out! We love it and hope that everyone else does too! It has been incredible. Thank you so much.

Girl on Fire truly captivated the audience at Aftershock Festival and we loved spreading  the news about their great CD. “Not Broken” was produced and mixed by Jay Baumgardner (PAPA ROACH, SEVENDUST, EVANESCENCE) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (NIRVANA, AREOSMITH, THE WHITE STRIPES).  It is amazing that for a debut album, it is full of hits. Austin Held delivers crisp powerful vocals, Nicholas Wiggins and Nick McMahon treat you to their explosive guitar riffs and energizing rhythms as Josh Mouser dishes up some blistering bass and Harry MacDonald brings it all home with his precision drumming. You can’t go wrong with this album!

Check out their music video for their single, “The Takedown” which just KICKS ASS in every way!!!!
