Pink Slips gives punk rock a welcoming synthpop facelift

Today our music scene contains a never ending list of genres or subgenres but what we really are missing is a rekindling of our love for punk rock and synth. Imagine a young band that brings to life your love of 90’s synth pop music and wraps it deliciously in young spirited punk rock. No need to dream about it, because Pink Slips is the answer to your wishes. The LA based punk rock band, Pink Slips is fronted by 17 year old Grace McKagan. Yes, the name might sound familiar, she is the daughter of Duff McKagan (GUNS N’ ROSES/VELVET REVOLVER/WALKING PAPERS).

In addition to Grace, the band features Keenan Bevens and Trent Peltz and they have recently released their infectiously catchy 6 song EP, Say L’or Venus which is available on iTunes here.  Grace’s vocals remind me of a blend of Debbie Harry, Kim Wilde and modern day Taylor Momsen. She brings out such a fun flirty side to her music. It is charismatic, edgy and invigorating.

The EP starts right off with my favorite song, Googlie Eyes and I love the attitude in this song and it’s fun spirited bounce. You immediately fall in love with Grace’s voice and then you are taken right into Dream Boy which delivers a smitten kitten vibe. You can’t  help but move when you are listening to the EP and even more so when Foxy Feline comes on. Check out the video for it here:

Grace can bring such a maturity and depth of emotion to her voice as she does in the edgy mysterious Cruella song which is another one of my faves. It is such a creative track that has a very Jefferson Airplane – Go Ask Alice vibe. It is swirling with atmosphere and tones that take you on a magical journey. Meet You At the Moon has a catchy chorus and once again Grace displays that flirty attitude in her voice as you can’t help but be drawn to her. The EP wraps up with Bratty Attitude and this is one bad ass track and I love the organic nature of the song. It brings out their youthful vibe and is definitely soon to be an anthem for the young! You are full on with energy and ready to listen to the EP all over again. What is nice about the Pink Slips is, that their music is youthful, yet has the maturity that will also attract 40-somethings who long for new music that delivers the passion of the songs from their own youth.

Quite an impressive EP and I hope you get a chance to pick up this musical gem. It will bring your emotions to life, have you dancing around and feel so alive with energy. I am hoping they will tour in support of the EP because I can only imagine the adrenaline of these three live!

We will see if we can bring you an interview with them soon.  For now, make sure to visit their social media sites and stay up to date on their latest news.
