Salvador Santana.  Rising Up for a better world. By Patrick O’Heffernan

June 9, 2014

Once in a while an artist comes along whose music and whose character allows him or her to rise up and stand out from the many talented musicians who vie for our attention.  This weekend I was fortunate enough to hear and spend time with one such person, Salvador Santana, who is creating the change-the world-anthems of our time and demonstrating the change with his own life Salvador Santana played for a crowded and very happy house Friday night at the Witzend Listening Room in Venice California, literally bringing people to their feet with songs from his latest album, Rise Up, and earlier albums, SSB and Keyboard City. The performance was joyful, high-octane,  professional and precisely tuned to the room and the audience.  Santana showed a confidence born of years of performing before crowds ranging from 50 to 300,000 people, winning a Grammy and opening for and playing with some of the legends of our time, including his father. Even before the set began, as his crew was loading a seeming warehouse full of equipment [Read More]

Black Label Society delivers a spine tingling set at Regency Ballroom for Golden Gods Tour

June 8, 2014

What a night! This past Friday, the place to be was at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco for the Revolver Golden Gods Tour. There was a line around the block as everyone came out in full force to catch Black Label Society perform. Also make sure to check out our coverage of the amazing two opening bands, Devil You Know and Butcher Babies. I think it was a sold out show or nearly sold out since earlier that day they had only a 100 or so tickets left. It was packed from front to back, left to right and the entire upstairs was filled with no empty seats. Black Label Society came out and were behind a full stage curtain, and then the lights went up and the curtain came down. Our photographer Rockin Ryan was in the photo pit and got wildly tangled in the rope but he made it out just in time to catch Zakk take center stage!  The crowd went WYLDE as they started with  My Dying Time. There was a full on [Read More]

Corinne West pulls you into her orbit with The Promise. By Patrick O’Heffernan

June 8, 2014

By Patrick O’Heffernan, Host Music FridayLive!  Turn off your devices, put on your headphones, close your eyes and let yourself be drawn into a new orbit by Corinne West’s gravitational pull in her new album, The Promise. Listening to the nine songs  of The Promise feels like experiencing two galaxies merging with  each other, slowly, beautifully, sparkling with a billion solar flares.  Corinne’s voice is terrifyingly beautiful and her lyrics are urgently luxurious, creating music is that is addictive.  The Promise is all of these things, and it is the best thing she has ever done. Corinne can write and perform music that is soft, sweet, painfully authentic and yet feels imminent,  like  a storm on the horizon.  She can infuse one song with insistence and the next with wonder.  The Promise, recorded with Jeri Jones and Pam Delgado of Blame Sally,  is very personal and yet distant,  as if Corinne has taken you into her consciousness  and let you join her standing outside of the subjects of her songs. This inside-outside quality is [Read More]

Butcher Babies at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco for Golden Gods Tour

June 8, 2014

This weekend was once again filled with incredible shows to cover and incredible sets by many awesome bands, check out our coverage of Devil You Know here and Black Label Society here. Friday night we were at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco for the Revolver Golden Gods Tour. The night started off with a fierce set by one of my favorite bands, Butcher Babies. We had a blast covering them last year at the Monster Energy Aftershock Festival and were glad to see them back. This band is never short on energy as they were determined to start the night off with a bang. The crowd was packed and I believe it was a sold out, or nearly sold out show. The best part was that everyone got there early enough to catch the full set of Butcher Babies. Vocalists Heidi and Carla truly know how to command the audience as they had everyone under their Butcher Babies spell. Check out the photos of our Rockin Ryan here of their set: We are so [Read More]
