Oak Street Blues span across the genres for some alternative country rock

April 14, 2014

Yes, that is right I called it alternative, country, rock and I might add even hints of electronic, blues and pop. That is exactly what you get from Southern California band, Oak Street Blues. The band was founded by Chris Hall, and with his 15 year history with several bands from a variety of genres, he brought together his influences to create their own unique sound that reminds me of a cross between Tom Petty and Wilco. Oak Street Blues is Chris Hall on Lead Guitar/Singer, Stephanie Sheer on  Keyboards/Vocals, Jenny Arias on Bass and Alejandra Arellano on Drums. When they come together and perform you are guaranteed an energetic, lively and unpredictable time but hence you will always have fun! You may even catch sight of a Pumpkin, Penguin, Spaceman or Mr. Frog. “Sometimes it’s nice to just get away from your daily life to enjoy a fun-filled concert setting that will make you laugh and jump around,” says Oak Street Blues guitarist/lead singer Chris Hall. “Rock ’n‘ roll comes to life at our shows. We will definitely entertain you.” Their latest EP, Calico, is [Read More]

Up.Rooted. A review of Gina Chavez’s latest album – a musical triumph and a transformational experience.

April 7, 2014

Up.Rooted. A review of Gina Chavez’s latest album – a musical triumph and a transformational experience. With Up.Rooted, Gina Chavez has established herself as the Joan Baez of her generation.   We are now seeing an emergence of second and third generation Latin musicians who were raised at home in Spanish  with cumbia and reggaeton and bosa nova and in school in English with rock and rap and blues and jazz.  They are creating a new genre – Gringo-Latin pop, Latino-white folk, Latin fusion – it goes by many names because it hasn’t gelled enough to have one name.  The young men and women who are creating this new genre bring something else to the table besides bi-lingual musical forms, human stories and a social conscious.  They sing songs of immigrant abuse, of NAFTA, of homelessness, of human rights.  They are to the 21st century what Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, Aretha Franklin and Bob Dylan were to the war in Vietnam and the US Civil Rights movement.  Gina Chavez is one of the artists leading [Read More]

March 17, 2014

Today our Bottle Rock Napa Featured Band is Empires. From the first time I listened to Empires, I was taken back to the nightlife of the ’90s as I would go club hopping and enjoy grunge, alternative, and mod.  It was a time for you to feel the music and literally have it take over you. Empires are an Indie Alternative band from Chicago that do just that. You can’t help but listen to them and be “in the moment”. March 12, 2014

Allow the music of Lyonn to wrap around you as you dance with the melodies.  Lyonn is the musical project by Tyler Gelrud and from first listen, you will instantly be charmed by his voice.  Lyonn‘s current EP KNIVSTA is filled with honest and raw songs that beautifully tell the tales from Tyler’s life.          The first song Silver Screen Love is a romantic tale that will have you reminiscing of the first time you were deeply in love, even feeling the fluttering of those butterflies as you remember their name and those special moments. The vocals dance in your head as it paints the picture of romance. On Bastille Day, once again you are drawn into the story of the song and the vocals are powerful and emotionally driven.
