Guitarist Callan Milward says: “Living week by week with the exact same routine can grind you down even though it can also feel like the safest and/or easiest option at the time. And also about the area around Angel, Islington.” Despite, or perhaps because of, the absence of frontman Dave Le’aupepes father, his influence extends through the whole album – sometimes subliminal, sometimes clearly, when it’s about the specific personal experiences of loss: The oppositeness of intensity and inner contemplation, which happens, when a man experiences his last days; the overwhelming feeling for the surviving relatives, that, after the death of a loved one their lives will never be the same, while the rest of the world takes its course as if nothing happened. After their latest single, “the angel of 8th ave.” – which is about falling in love and finding a new life in a new town together – and “the [Read More]

Waxflower share new single “Soak”

November 11, 2021

After releasing their heart-on-sleeve debut EP ‘We Might Be Alright’ earlier this year, Brisbane pop-punk aficionados Waxflower today reveal a change of pace with their new single ‘Soak’. Having explored the subtle addition of electronic elements in previous releases, Waxflower today boldly step forward into the embrace of layered synthesizers, and a darker, heavier sonic direction. Keen listeners will also note a second vocal on the track – that of the band’s guitarist Jordan Beard. Despite this new contrast, the undercurrent of hopefulness for which the band has become known is still ever-present on ‘Soak’. Mental health has been a consistent theme woven throughout Waxflower’s lyrics, and ‘Soak’ continues this narrative, exploring the anxiety and panic disorder experienced by frontman Tristan Higginson. “‘Soak’ is about the lowest of lows, standing before a hopelessness that feels insurmountable” says Higginson. “When my panic attacks were at their worst, I wanted a medicated lobotomy — I just wanted it to be done. The song zeroes in on those moments where you would give up anything for the pain [Read More]
